This has all been wonderful, but...

After over five years and almost 500 shows, Phix will be calling it quits in 2007. It has been an amazing experience for all of us, but it's time for a change and we are looking forward to pursuing original projects again. For now, we plan on having a couple more Phix tours to try and get back to some of our favorite places to say goodbye and give folks a last chance to catch us before we stop touring. We'll play a handful of shows in our home state of Colorado and maybe someone will bring us out to a festival, but we should have it wrapped up by the end of the summer. We will make ourselves available for festival invites and private shows through the end of the year while we still have the chops. Thanks for all your support over the years! (Read more on our MySpace blog).

With this announcement the band is excited to release their first round of confirmed "Pharewell Tour" dates. Dates marked with an asterisk* will be the last shows for that town.

Phix Pharewell Tour Dates:
1.25 | Cervante's Masterpiece Ballroom | Denver, CO
1.26 | Sandbar | Vail, CO*
1.27 | The Goat Soup and Whiskey | Keystone, CO*

I was lucky enough to sit in with these guys 3 times on their visits to St. Louis. The kindness they showed in plugging the St. Louis Phish tribute band I play in, Riker's Mailbox, was awesome. The also kicked serious butt in each show they played here. If you are in St. Louis come on out to hear us and another great St. Louis Phish tribute band, our phriends, The Helping Phriendly Band. Original music IS good, but I will testify that PLAYING Phish tunes is SO MUCH fun, I can hardly contain myself!!

Oh good...these guys wouldn't want to become caricatures of themselves or anything (just kidding).

But seriously, these guys rock! They are super cool guys, and I am happy for them. Not only are they probably bored of just playing phish songs, but they surely are losing their market by the month.

I saw them in 06 and they kicked ass! But as much as I love(d) phish, I just don't get that excited about their music anymore. Maybe I am still bitter that phish called it quits so abruptly, only to see Trey put out such bad solo music. It was kind of like a bad divorce where your dad leaves your cool mom for an ugly skank (maybe that's a harsh analogy).

Good luck guys formerly in Phix!

First of all DSO is rad. Also I know its really cool to hate on Phish and cover bands. I love when people say they hate cover bands because these are the same people that attend OR have attended shows like these and get super-fadded and just hate on the band the whole time. I know I am right because I see it all the time. If you are that perosn, you suck. Thats original.

oh my god! like, phix is breaking up! anything but that! who will I tour with, SUPERDIAMOND? ELVIS IMPERSONATERS? (sobing about it)

dont tell folks have finally discovered music as art - not empty entertainment worth no more than the $$ you can make as lightweight song and dance men. congrats!!!!

so...what happened to talk at phix band meetings of making "billions" like your friends DSO? why would you guys stop playing phish covers when doing so makes so many cash regesters in the burger joints youall play at across the country SING SING SING so loud? there is no money in origional music.....also a low tolerance for posers...mabey you could think about a reunion tour every so often?

does this mean that you guys will go back to writing shit that all sounds like phish songs you all did with Ralph's Kind? (you fucking so glad this bullshit is will be eternally labeled 'the jerkoffs form the phish cover band'...forever branded 'the assholes who thought they would be on top of the world by now'....ha ha ha ha ... i have heard jukeboxes make more of a creative statement than you!

I continue to be mystified by the visceral reaction to these guys; I mean, it's not like like they started a freaking war. Nobody got hurt. I hope you angry ones are walking the walk and writing your own excellent music. I would think that knowing Page and Mike looked in on them for kicks would at least make people take stock and chill on the attacks, whether you dislike the idea of them or not. Best of luck. Evilfunk, I have no immediate wish to argue with you, and I have seen very informative posts of yours quite unlike your Phix diatribes (you did an excellent bass analysis recently), but since you feel the need to lecture me about the Phish "culture" without having the first clue about who I am I might as well mention that I am in fact from Vermont and know several of the members of Phish, I am a musician with a large body of original work, and have been around the music world for over thirty years, including many a Dead tour- so, pardon my defensiveness, but I'm pretty sure I understand the "culture" fairly well. My essential point is that one does not need to take the existence of Phix so damned personally. If Page and Mike don't have a big problem with it, why should anyone else? On one level, it could be seen as flattery. I grew up stealing licks from Leo Kottke before I found my own way; it is often a natural progression in the growth of a musician. You act as if these Phix guys are some evil individuals actively injuring people. It's just music and I'm pretty certain that they are not getting rich off playing Phish tunes in crappy little bars; the whole thing is so harmless, whether you like them or not- which, sure, it's totally ok to NOT like them, and I never imtimated otherwise. Interestingly, a buddy of mine has a friend in DSO and asked him if they ever catch "tribute" flak on the level of Phix and he said not at all. In the end, if you mean that my lack of understanding is why I can't grock the venom and hatred, then you are correct, that is a culture I do not understand, nor wish to. Peace and thank you for reading.

leo k is pretty obscure and depending on how you do it i think it could be cool to work some of his sound and vibe into playing on any instrument. breadloaf - tell me this - were you trying to make huge dough by stealing leo k's licks or even name? did you quit playing that way when the dough didnt come rolling in like phix is doing? no...aint no money in sounding like leo k is there? he aint huge like did it for music , i assume.

you gotta make your own name and sound out of whatever you do, right? i feel like i have to! as for phix...we will see what they come up with...anything is better than phish covers. I cant wait to comment on the origonal stuff when it comes around... IT HAS TO BE BETTER THAN PHISH COVERS! what a silly way to make a living! phix saw what $$$ DSO were making and were in a buisiness sense copying DSO. that is even sillier to me. enjoy your phalse phrofits (there were none, haha) !!!!

You know, i really feel sorry for people who actually have the capacity to hate. It doesn't matter what you hate on, you're still hating something. That must be horrible to live with.

Anyway, i never got to see Phish. So does that make me lesser of a person than you all? Shut the fuck up. Phix is doing a great, great thing. They aren't making SHIT for money. They're doing this because they love to play music, and they love hearing Phish's music coming out of speakers and making people dance. They're doing this because they're phans, and because they want to dance to live Phish music just as much as we do, which is why they're doing what they do. Wanna know why you guys are all twisting your panties around? Its because you're pissed off that these guys play 10 times better than all those post-hiatus Phish shows you paid to see. Sure, i would have given both of my nuts to see a single PH Phish show, but you know what? I can't. But you know what i can do? I can go to a club and watch an amazing guitar player have fun while performing a flawless Reba, You Enjoy Myself, David Bowie, and I Am Hydrogen. I can watch their amazing drummer rip up Fishman licks left and right, and watch these guys get smiles as big as you all had when you saw Trey pull those licks off in Fluffhead on July 24th, 1999, or when Page let loose with his Hammond organ on Tube from 12/13/99.

These guys gave their life so that we could continue to experience live Phish music from proficient musicians. You're all just pissed because they're paid to indulge in YOUR fantasy; they're getting paid to play the music that we all love because it's writers aren't.

If you really have the capacity to hate on people who are taking a gift that we were all given, and doing their best to furthur it's existence, well, then i am truly, truly sorry for you. I am so sorry that you are incapable of experiencing joy from something that exists solely for you to do just that: experience joy.

Maybe you guys should stop being prejudicial, arrogant, Phishier-than-thou stuck-ups and actually go watch these guys tear up a nasty Divided Sky, or jam the greatest Wolfman's Brother that has ever existed (Phish, Phil and Phriends, Trey solo, or otherwise: my aim s/n is Satanicguitarist. send me a better Wolfman's than the one Phix played at Red Square in Albany, NY and i will send you 10 dollars).

All in all, this is exactly the reason why Phish should stay broken up: Their core fans cant even appreciate people trying to continue giving us what Phish themselves could no longer do without killing themselves off like Jerry. How sad is that? Really, how sad is it?

Please do not come back together, Phish. I am forever grateful i was able to experience the magic of your music through the members of Phix, as are thousands of others, i am sure.

Perhaps I am overly optimisitc, but isn't it possible that these guys are not in fact in it for the money? If they have not made enough to continue to function, then I cannot imagine them having made money in the past playing the same material and venues.
EVIL, you're right, I never made squat sounding like Leo, but Mike pairing with Leo sure gave Kottke a healthy pay raise by introducing Leo to thousands of Phish fans.

EVILFUNK didnt have to have seen phish to be cool. there is alot of awesome recorded phish music around to dig. PLAY IT LOUD,OFTEN! ALSO- there are tons of new bands who built on ideas that they learned from phish's music without jacking anyone. the idea is that in order to be as cool and great as phish you have to be your self and challenge yourself....thats what they were doing. pushing themselves to go way beyond anything anyone did before them. calling people haters because they take this idea seriously does nothing to adress the arguement that this is weak. it is an attack on the idea that art should be questioned....comeon folks! we must question art!

"we never kept it going to cash in blah blah blah" a member of the phix band emails me saying. i feel bad because he seems like a good guy from our emails and i have heard that he is a MONSTER player, but...

phix is quitting because the money making hopes that inspired them to play in the first place are not panning out. now they realize they would have to work almost as hard as a REAL band does for a few years to build a name and enough interest in the music they play to keep the boat afloat. most of phishs fans think its stupid (at least) to have a phish tribute! the money making plan flopped over it.

lets do the math - when phish plays markets they sell a solid 20,000 tickets. when phix plays they might draw 1,000 people at best (we know im being generous). thats 19,000 people in every market who for one reason ar another feel it is important to make a phish performance but they wont bother with a phish tribute - even the largest phish tribute band being marketed cant pull us in! now im not saying that all 19,000 people in question would exactly support what im saying but im willing to estimate that at least 10.000 of them would agree that a phish tribute is bunk.

asside from breadloaf, the best defense this act or thier fans can offer has to do with rumors started about a woman who is now PISSED at a phix band member (you are friends of the band, we all know it because friends we share with the band come to us to tell us what this member is saying about this woman and i...than its typed it here). she is more than interested in speeking with some old family from CO so can set the record straight...she will be telling "the real story"....not your frat brothers, you poser (yes little shwag artist. id say say it to my face but than i would risk being seen talking to someone from a Phish tribute - yuck!)

breadloaf - thanks for engaging in intelligent discussion about this issue. you have made some most respectable points and i am sorry for assuming anything about you. or being harsh with you. you seem like good people.

PHIX = "practically extinct from doing things smart people dont do". BEWARE OF PHALSE PHROPHET$

I'm in shock as to the amount of argument this story has generated. Like the concept or not, there is a strong market for cover bands. They fill bars, get people dancing, sell beers, and allow everyone to have a great time listening to music they enjoy. And the good ones (like Phix) can even make you feel nostalgic for the band to whom they pay tribute. So if cover bands aren't your thing, don't go! But certainly don't hate on them because they are following their passion and playing live music in front of people.

I wish the guys in Phix good luck with their future projects. They are great musicians so I look forward to seeing what they create.
