PHIL LESH DOING WELL

From www.phillesh.com:

Phil Lesh
Phil Lesh had surgery on Tuesday, December 5th at the Vattikuti Urology Institute at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, the leading center for prostate cancer and urology health in the US. The Vattikuti Institute developed the robotic surgery method used for Phil's surgery, treats people from all over the world, and teaches the methodologies they have developed to many other doctors.

His surgery went very well, although he did require blood transfusions. He is already out of the hospital and is healing well.

The Unbroken Chain Foundation is asking phans to donate blood this month in honor of Phil. In honor of your commitment, UBC will donate $10.00 to the Vattikuti Urology Institute for every pint donated through December 31st, 2006 (to a maximum of $50,000).

After you have donated, please send an email to donor@phillesh.net with the subject "I Gave Blood". Please include your name, blood bank name, city, and state.

Thank you for your love and support.
Phil looks forward to being back making music with you soon.

For more information please head over to www.phillesh.com.

Phil Lesh
What do I have in common with Rudy Giuliani, John Kerry, Bob Dole, Joe Torre, Nelson Mandela, Sean Connery, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Emperor Akihito of Japan, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Colin Powell, Quincy Jones, Roger Moore, Sydney Poitier, and Robert De Niro?

Like them, and along with thousands of other men, I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Since my liver transplant, my health has been monitored by a crack team of doctors; in the course of this program, I have periodic blood tests and clinic visits. At my last clinic, my doctor noticed that my PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels had increased over the last period. He recommended that I see a urologist, and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. I have decided to have it removed in early December with da Vinci robotic surgery. Since we've caught it very early, and it's small and slow-growing, I fully expect to have a rapid and complete recovery.

I am feeling energetic as always, and all my scheduled appearances will occur as planned.

As you know, I urge everyone to become an organ donor to help save lives. Now, I am also urging all men: speak to your doctor about having periodic regular PSA screening for early detection of prostate cancer- you may save your own life.

While I certainly agree with NickBoeka that having your "nuts checked" for testicular cancer is important, the prostate is located in an entirely different are of the body :) Get well soon Phil!!

I love the man and his music, and the discussions I had with him this summer were some of the most entertaining I've ever had with an artist. He's completely and totally unassuming, and he maintains the joyous wonder of a curious child.

I trust he'll pull through with flying colors and he'll again serve as a walking example of the need for people to take care of themselves and others.

But let's hope he can find a way to combine a prostate rap with his organ donor rap, and keep it all under five minutes ;)

Go Phil!

He's lucky. The old medical saying is that if you live long enough you'll have some amount of prostate cancer. Phil is lucky that he has had regular check-ups due to the transplant. Isn't that a weird kind of luck? Anyhow, tell you fathers, uncles, grandfathers, etc... do an annual check. If you have prostate cancer, it is very very very well combated when diagnosed early.

And the testicle/nut check post just signifies how little some folks know about the good ol' semen bag.

In June of 2005, I was diagnosed with small, low grade prostate cancer & elected to forgo immediate, aggressive treatment by participating in Johns Hopkins Expectant Management of Prostate Cancer Program. So far so good. The 2nd & 3rd biopsies have been negetive and the other tests have showed no changes. Being 67 years old was another factor. Good Luck.
