Dear Particle People,

Scott Metzger with Particle :: 02.24 by Earl Gardner

It's with great sadness and surprise that we recently learned Scott Metzger will no longer be a member of Particle. Last week, Scott received unfortunate news of an unforeseen family emergency that requires his long term attention. The combination of Particle's rigorous touring schedule, west coast rehearsals, and upcoming studio projects make it impossible for Scott to commit to both the band and his east coast family. Health and family always come first to us. Although we will miss him in the band, we respect his decision and wish both him and his family the best.

In the short amount of time Scott has been with us, we developed a meaningful friendship and brotherhood, both musically and personally. We're so thankful to have the Transformations DVD and Live CD to look back on the excitement and joy the five of us shared on stage. Although this was a brief chapter in Particle's history, we had some incredible experiences together. It was a great ride and we have no regrets.

Scott feels the same way and wanted to share some thoughts of his own. Here is a statement from him:

"This was not an easy decision for me to make. I lost sleep numerous nights over this, but have come to the conclusion that this is the best move for me and my family. The last six months have offered great opportunities and experiences that I'll hold dear to my heart for the rest of my life. I want to make it very clear that there is absolutely no ill will between me and the band who I now consider lifelong friends. I wish Particle and their extended family nothing but the best."

We understand that this change may seem like a setback, but amazingly enough this type of thing actually focuses and motivates us more than ever. No shows will be cancelled (if anything, they'll be added!) and we can't wait to get back out there and take the Particle experience to new heights. We are excited to explore the Particle sound as a quartet and only time will tell what additions may or may not come in the future.

From Street Scene and Lollapalooza...the Six Year Anniversary and everything beyond and in between, we'll see you soon.

scott is one of the most influential guitar players in the scene today. it sucks he has to leave particle, but you have to respect his decision. If anyone hears any news regarding the lollapalooza post show, please post a comment on it.

Anyone know if they will be replacing Scott?

"one of the most influential" may be stretching it a bit but Scott is a stellar musician and person. He will be missed but I think this opens, again, some exciting times for the Particle boys. Without having been able to mold fully with Scott this opens Ben's role and who knows for the future....keep an eye on these guys....

I had trouble taking this band seriously before the addition of the two new guitaurists - Metzger especially brought credibility to the band for me. he gets sick tone and knows how to drive group improvisation without stealing the spotlight. a loss for the band, no doubt.

Jon Gentry Jr. Cincinnati. Ask Umprey's, Oteil and Jimmy Herring they've all played with him. Great fit! Best wishes to Scott.

This is a total bummer, at least they got a dvd out of it though. on the breeze board they said that they're just gonna stick it out with ben for the rest of this tour and that they have no doubt he can make up for scott's absence.

This is an unfortunate and unforseen occurance but if anyone can make the best of the situation its Particle. The upcoming tour is going to be really interesting to see where Particle goes, but I'm fully confident that it will rock!!

I gave these guys a chance after the tranformation, and at the show I saw no one was dancing and 1/2 of the people left VERY early. The lyrics to the new songs were .... I don't even have a good word for what they were. The guitar lines (from both guys) were extremely boring. Steve Molitz is amazing and, at thimes, their bass player does some sweet stuff, but ...... time for a major change guys! That being said, I have to appreciate the trouble that Mr. Metzger is dealing with..... I wish him and his family the best & think it shows a lot of class to make such a decision.

Good luck and thougts to Scott. Perhaps they can get back to some space porn funk now...i.e. lose the lyrics altogether.
namaste, metzger

jerryil you take the words right out of my mouth. That is exactly how i felt. I loved the first particle everyone there was gettin DOWN to the space porn. and then i recently saw them again and i was so disapointed with the new guitars and lyrics. Bottom line get back with micky and give me another HYDRA TOUR! And god bless you scott and your family

I dont know what to think.. sad news for any person to have a family problem. I saw particle at bonnaroo 1, at 11am. thought it was really cool. they are comin to chattanooga this october.. I hope they have their sound ironed out by then. I am positive that vocals are a bad idea. some bands, need to stick to instrumental music only. Like the disco biscuits, because FACE it they cant sing werf a shat.. Love the music tho. good luck particle.. cant wait to see you in chattanooga tn!!

never liked the guitar aspect myself, so I'm excited.
Nothing against Metzger, I never even saw him perform, but I think this is the best thing that could happen to the band. Word

No shows will be cancelled, so that is good news. I'm sorry to hear about scott having family problems tho.

As for those of you who weren't happy with the transformed particle, give them another chance! The last time I saw them in chicago was amazing...very energetic show. I don't think anyone was unsatisfied!

It's appropriae that the one cool guy in the band would leave. Now they can really go for that MTV sound Steve is so into since Charlie left.

I was lucky enough to see Particle play an amazing little show in Upstate NY on Sunday night. These guys are on-point and they RAGED! This was for an audience of @200 international camp counselors, most of which had no clue who Particle was. Mountanside, shooting stars, and a fresh vibe sums it up. Never saw Metzger play (God bless his fam), but Ben was great! He really comes in blazin for many jams and plays with such feeling, he reminds me of Trey in '93 - open to the universe and feeling his way up the frets instead of planning it. These guys are beautiful people and are destined for greatness. Lookout Fool's Paradise (same venue as Sunday night) - that mountain has history with this band and I'm sure history will be made during that new festival later in the fall.

Particle was my band of choice for many years, and still is. I never missed an Asheville or Charlotte show and had the opportunity to see them at Bonnaroo a few years back (and that horrible, headache of an AllGood show last year.)

If the band really wanted to change their sound they should've hired a new drummer. Even with 2 new guitarist, its still the same old 4\4 time signature routine. They fucked around and kicked Charlie Hitchcock out, who is an extremely versatile guitarist. Sorry he looks like a yuppie from 1995, but he could still rip face.

hey BigFro,
If you could please point in the direction of a band that sounds the slightest bit like Particle and is played on MTV then i would greatly appreciate it. Your post makes no sense.

I'm sorry but Metzger's other projects I heard are far better than Particle. Someone on here a while back said to listen to a particular jam on their website's sampler and I thought it as well as the others to be quite mediocre. I really think farticle (yes farticle) are way overrated and only get the exposure they do due good management. Too many bands out there could wipe the floor with particle and you don't see everybody jockin their nuts. Anyways, don't mean to tap the keg of haterade but god damn at least Charlie fucking rocked.
