On July 18th, the independent audio and video company Shout! Factory will release two new live titles from the Los Angeles-based band Particle. The DVD, Transformations Live, was recorded on February 24, 2006 at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, CA before a capacity crowd. Transformations Live: For The People will also be released as a companion two-CD set that includes recordings from the Henry Fonda show as well as songs from the February 28, 2006 performance at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. The live DVD and CD set capture a fresh line up that now includes the band's two new guitar players and the addition of vocals. Both releases feature very special guests such as Joe Satriani, Robby Krieger, Blackalicious, and DJ Logic. The Transformations Live DVD and the Transformations Live: For The People two-CD set will be available for the suggested retail price of $14.98 and $18.98, respectively.

Particle, after playing 700 shows in eight countries over five years, took a break from the road from October of 2005 until February of this year in order to begin searching for a new guitar player after the departure of guitarist Charlie Hitchcock. Now a five-piece band, Particle added two guitar players and vocalists Ben Combe and Scott Metzger to its core lineup consisting of original members Eric Gould (bass, vocals), Darren Pujalet (drums, vocals) and Steve Molitz (keyboards, vocals). During auditions, Combe and Metzger each made unique and powerful impressions on the band through their complimentary guitar styles and vocal abilities. So in the end, Particle asked both players to join. Containing footage from the newly staffed Particle's first live performance, The Transformations releases document this turning point in Particle’s career.

Transformations Live contains three songs not on the companion CD, including a 15-minute rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" with all the evening’s special guests joining in on the fun. The DVD also includes a special appearance by the Lucent Dossier dance troupe. The 5.1 Surround Sound DVD bonus features include the Particle Transforms featurette (featuring "Triple Threat" and the new song "The Sweeper"), the Collaborations featurette (featuring "Simulator" with Joe Satriani) and a Transformations photo gallery (featuring the new song "Smile").

Shortly after the Henry Fonda event, Particle headed to The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco where they recorded songs to include on the audio release. The Fat Tuesday party was complete with a feathered burlesque dance troupe and a second-line horn section. Transformations Live: For The People contains a handful of songs that are unique to the CD set including "Triple Threat," "Ghetto Queen," "Fiyo On The Bayou", "Ed & Molly" and "Losing It", all recorded during the Mardi Gras extravaganza. All of the special guests on the DVD are included on the CD as well.

yeah i heard some fuct shit about hitchcock and how he never really got along with the band and how shitty they treated him, FUCT up. they are a good band and all but what the F%^&K. he wasnt the best guitarist for the band but no way should have been treated the way he was. also anyone know abbout the Particle vs STS9 feud? just curious, anyway i hope that the new guitarists rock the shit out or else they lost a long standing fan. plus they went from playing the House of blues here in cleveland to a tiny bar called the Grog shop, what gives?

I've had the pleasure of viewing this DVD before the release...This video is incredible..if you've been a longtime Particle fan..or even a new one, it's definitely worth your DVD collection. The production is INCREDIBLE. Very well edited. And it has some great Special Features too! Superstition at the end has some amazing interaction w/ all four guitarists up on stage that will blow you away!

As for all you people making comments about Hitchcock...first off NO ONE but Hitchcock & Particle know the TRUTH, and it's not anyone's biz...also why bring up old news...CH isn't w/ em anymore but he still rocks and I know he's working hard to bring new music to his fans....there's room for both particle & hitchcock in this*t happens deal with it...

If anyone wants a good reason to get this stuff go to and listen to the spring sampler, specifically the detroit show, which is the longest clip available and includes several songs. They're absolutly rocking with the new guitarists. Can't wait till they hit up Michigan again on August 2nd and 3rd.

Particle is one of the best bands touring. Don't judge them for the Charlie thing. None of us know the real story but this sort of thing happens all the time in this industry.

I cant wait to see them again this summer. the spring tour was raging and this one is looking to be even better!!

This is awesome! The new particle kicks so much ass it's stupid! Can't wait for the DVD and to get my next particle fix in person. If you haven't had the pleasure of experiencing the new stylings of Particle do yourself a favor and check it out. You won't be disappointed!

I can't wait for the DVD / CD to come out. I've already pre-ordered both of them and will be checking my mailbox frequently.

The upcoming tour will be monsterous. Tons of dates across the country. Plus they've had all summer to practice and refine the sound.

Trust me, they are KILLING it right now.

From the sample I saw on an e-card the quality is outstanding. I have caught several of their shows over the last few months and they are getting better and better. The new lineup is bringing the heat as much as ever! I can't wait to see them with Ozric Tentacles on 7/15 at the Filmore in San Fran.

i've been listening to particle for a long time and charlie was where it was at. I saw them recently at the trocadero in philly (a no show) and the bands new additions are either taking a long time to get used to it or just arent cut out for the gig. Ben Combe has a great style, and did alright fitting in. Metzger just needs to stick to something else ie rana. I spent the whole night watching him search for notes that werent there. Steve, Darren, and Eric may need to get another search going cause these two cant keep up with the speeding rollercoaster multiple-
orgasm sound that particle was built on.

I've been a HUGE Particle fan since the very first note I heard of there's late night after Trey on Sunday at Mountain Aire 2002. I was tired as all hell but still danced my ass off for another 2 hours. I didn't take my eyes off Charlie's guitar for 20 minutes & he quickly became my favorite guitarist. Particle also quickly became my favorite band & they're some of the coolest musicians I know.

I've seen them 20 times, 3 w/ the new line-up (April 1 in Tahoe & twice at Sherwin's in Mammoth last weekend). The Tahoe show was real good & still better than the vast majority of the 2200 shows I've seen, but not as good as any other P show I'd seen. I was disappointed they were having vocals to begin w/ & I was real POed about Charlie. Scott & Ben are excellent guitarists, but they don't shred like Charlie. I didn't care much for Scott & Ben's new songs (So Severe & Walking By) & thought their vocals were average. Steve didn't seem as into it as usual & they only went into super-hyperdrive 3 times, rather than closer to their usual 10 times. About a third of the show was space porn; the rest was just solid rock. Some of it was way too slow for my tastes, especially for Particle. When they jammed hard, they jammed REAL HARD, though.

The Mammoth shows were off the hook altogether. 2 of the best P shows I've seen excluding late nights & High Sierra. They were 4 times better than the Tahoe show & the only remotely comparable show I've seen this year (out of 60) was Tea Leaf Green at the Crystal Bay Club in Tahoe (the Breakfast was also exceptional there).

There were 130 people Friday (sold out) & 50 Saturday (they just announced that show in the middle of Friday's show). They played a great deal of excellent space porn, including a new one, & a great Cake cover; the vocals were much better & there was seemingly less of them; Steve went haywire both nights; the guitar interplay & leads were rather impressive; Eric & Darren smoked; there was plenty of jaw dropping, laugh out loud super-hyperdrive. In other words, it was a typical Particle dance til you drop party!!

If anyone had serious doubts about the new lineup it was certainly me. There are no doubts whatsoever any more! I can't strongly enough recommend checking them out regardless what your feelings about the Charlie Situation.

Here's what I've gathered about that: Charlie didn't want vocals, the rest of the band did. Charlie was the odd man out b/c nobody at that point wanted to or could sing lead (turns out Charlie has a pretty good voice from the one song I've heard on MySpace), Charlie joined the band after the others & he may not have been as close to any of the others as they were to each other. They also had stopped writing tunes as a group & were writing songs separately w/out as much input from the others, which lead to less than sterling, non-space porn & much slower tunes IMO. There might have been differences of opinion on that approach & the results. Regardless of what happened or whether the reasons were even somehow justifiable, the way it was handled was piss-poor. Nobody's perfect & the world hasn't ended or hardly even been scratched by the Situation, so getting over it & moving on is the only viable option for everyone. I'm now convinced Particle will continue to play fabulous shows & I simply can't wait to hear & see Charlie again ASAP.

just got the CD/DVD set last week for preview and have added "e-pro", "w", and "la woman" for spins on radioioJAM and just finished previewing the DVD. check out my blog for a complete review. i saw the new incarnation at the music farm in charleston and was severely impressed with ben combe's guitar work. check them out live for sure, but the DVD has great coverage of what the new guitar frontline is capable.

Steve's post was right on. Even though the split with Charlie was less than ideal, musically the band is playing some of their best shows ever. The addition of vocals has only caused their sound to get better. Defintly check out this new CD.

i hafta agree with color420's earlier post, shit happens... all you can do is move on and take each day with what it brings. charlie was a great guitarist, but he's not with the band anymore... life goes on. both particle and charlie are in a new era, where they can try things out and begin a new path, a new lease on life... after all, the only constant is change. both will be bringing it tho...

Particle is an overrated band, they always have been and they always will be. I'm not trying to be negative or anything, but I do know Steve, Darren and Eric, and yes they are A@#holes. They think someday (today) that they are a great band that is gonna make it all the way to Madison Square Garden. When in acuality they are just a bunch of spoiled trust fund babies who think they have talent. Don't get me wrong, They hit a good jam every now and then (thats few and far between) But they don't even come close to matching what STS9 is laying down. Maybe someday they will realize that the world doesn't revolve around them. Until then keep rockin "particle people" to a second hand watered down excuse for a good jam band. to sum it up "Particle Blows!!!!!"

I was at the show in LA and I can say that this show was incredible. Its wierd how they hire all those wierd people to walk around and freak you out, asking if they can cut the nipplers out of our shirts for a free shot.! They also had people strippings up in the side walls of the venue, i doubt that will be allowed on the dvd. They were officially added to Moe and Bisco, as my one of my favorite bands after this nasty show.

looking forward to the dvd and getting to relive the moments of that show. it's amazing to me how different they sound now compared to then too. that was the first show and it kicked ass. i've seen about 8 shows since then and continue to enjoy what they are creating. i am a big fan of the vocals myself and especially enjoyed steve's rhyme at the knitball. give them some room to grow. over time they'll begin to blend into one again. i'll be booty shakin with them along the way.
