It was business as usual at Red Rocks Amphitheatre last Saturday (June 3), which means, of course, another outstanding night of music enjoyed under the Colorado sky at one of the country's most beautiful and beloved music venues.

This time around, it was moe., headlining Red Rocks for the first time, and Umphrey's McGee getting the place moving and grooving. A short, yet pleasant, set from Mason Jennings and his small band opened the day.

Both moe. and Umphrey's, who recently finished a short run of shows touring together following the annual Summer Camp festival, were in top form and kept things interesting throughout each marathon set - one from Umphrey's and two from moe.

Umphrey's McGee :: 06.03.06 :: by Jeffrey Smith
Despite being billed as the opening act, Umphrey's McGee kicked off the evening's main course with an extended 13-song set. The band's songs never felt rushed, and a longer-than-usual opening slot allowed the band to venture wherever it needed without the limitations of a short set. It was classic Umphrey's and included a powerful run of songs — "Passing" > "Blue Echo" > "Jimmy Stewart" > "Sociable Jimmy" - in the heart of the set as well as the always fun "Layla" cover to bring things to a close.

It goes without saying, but everyone in moe. came ready to bring their "A" game to the night's musical offerings and their first Red Rocks headlining gig. The band came on strong with "Buster" and "Crab Eyes" followed with a premier cover of the The Black Crowes' "Wiser Time." The set, which was filled with extended jams, finished with a run of "Moth" > "The Pit" > "Tailspin." Set break offered the crowd an opportunity to once again collect thoughts, reflect on the first set's outcome, and prepare for another long set of heavy-duty moe. A non-musical highlight of the first set, and ultimately the rest of the evening, was the light show that played on the rocks behind the stage. It seemed to be a common point of discussion during the set break and kept eyes gazing beyond the band.

The final set of the evening was greeted with plenty of anticipation. The band proceeded to unleash a non-stop set of songs that started with "Brent Black" > "Californ IA" and continued uninterrupted into "Rebubula" > "Four" and then back into "Californ IA" before ultimately returning to "Rebubula." Fans were left wide-eyed and slightly stunned from the onslaught of moe. The segue-fest was an outstanding showcase of pure moe. and absolutely delighted the many Colorado fans in attendance. Then, to top it all off, the band played a double encore of one of its top live tunes, "St. Augustine," and one of its more exciting covers, "Don't Fear The Reaper." Throw in the guys from Umphrey's McGee, and the evening's climax, obviously, became even better.

For a show that was breaking in the season at Red Rocks for Colorado's jamband fans, things went over the top and exceeded expectations. The cool weather, a loosely filled venue, and some incredibly strong playing helped assure that almost no one went home disappointed.

This was a hot show to start up the summer season at Red Rocks. Umph and moe. offered non-stop high energy jamming with a fun collaboration encore. Needs more Cowbell!!!
But all I really have to say is that I can't wait for Panic to bring the heat this weekend, WSMFP

i been going to shows for well over 20 years and i can honestly say that i'm tired of it all.The music was mediocre at best and highly predictable.I think it is very sad watching all these kids frying their brains with all the drug use!Hey MOE why dont you guys write some new material!I just cant wait for a PHISH reunion.

HANNAHROCKS~~~~~bless you for waking up finally!! I woke up about a year ago to it all. Kids love the music when they are loaded on disco biscuits!! Drugs like that falsify how good something really is!! No one should need drugs to appreciate a smoking show!! I am a 17 yr vet myself. Saw the dead 16 times and JGB twice. I miss music with Magic.
Thank God I still have WSP... I just ignore the stupid drug filled kids.. I still go for the music. "The music was mediocre at best" I am sure it was Hannahrocks...
peace ya'll!!!!

Its kinda ironic that someone complains about drug use at a Moe show, but then wants a Phish reunion. Check your head.

I didn't manage to catch this show. But moe. and umphrey's are great and the set looks tight! Too bad they didn't jam more with switching members like at summercmap...

I'd love to ask how those who say the music is mediocre and predictable how so.

it sounds pretty fun that they segued different songs than usual and rocke dthe fuck out of them. Moe and umphreys put out new material quite a bit compared to a cerain band i wont name tha tbreaks up every other year to be lame and for the band leader to go on other tours to make money rather than play for the music!!!!

"Saw the dead 16 times and JGB twice. I miss music with Magic."

- do you mean the magic white powder, magic mushrooms, or magic doses?

I saw moe. and umpreys in kansas city the night before and there was very little drug use. Just good music, cold beverages, and some j's being passed around.

I had just come from Summer camp and the late night show Moe and Umphreys threw down Sunday was surely hard to top, but everything seemed to be just perfect for the Rocks. The percussion solo in Moe's set rocked my world! A great night with some great music.

This show was incredible, Im a huge Moe guy, 30+shows and I think Umphreys may have showed them up a bit. The layla cover was absolutely incredible, a must listen during the piano section......Moe was great as well, really didnt care for the Crowes cover, but take a listen to MothSpin as I call it...

umph seems to love doing layla in CO in the past 12 months.....and yes moe blows goats and have for awhile. they sold out and havent written anything new in i dont know how long cause i dont pay attention to those hypocrites. Umphreys blew them away and are continuing on their upward trend....as far as drug use...happens everywhere these days and as much as i am a die hard phish head (growing up born and raised) i dont think a reunion would go over too well....moe sux

"they sold out and havent written anything new in i dont know how long cause i dont pay attention to those hypocrites."

That makes sense. You don't pay attention but know they haven't written anything new? Well dill, fyi, they've written over 20 new songs in the past two years and have a new double disc coming out very soon. Hannahrocks--you obviously have no idea what you are talking about either.

The bottom line is moe. is the greatest thing going in the scene currently and have been for quite some time. I saw the Tulsa show two nights before and it was phenomenal.

These comments are soo funny. If anyone is complaining about "drug use" at a MOE. show compared to the dead or phish you are completely nuts. Drug use at phish anthe Dead is completely rampant and makes a moe show look like sesame street. Have you really ever been to either?? I've been to 40+ dead, 40+ phish and 30+ Moe. You can't even find shrooms or a dose at moe if you wanted too. Lets all just have a good time with the music and stop being so critical. As for predictible... chec set lists at the end of dead 90's and phish 2000's.... please. Why dont you pick up an instrument and see how EASY it really is... GO AWAY HATERS!!! love each other!!! IF YOU DONT LIKE IT DONT GO

this show was tight, but it's going down as one of those shows that I just can't remember! I mean, I was in lot, then I was shuffling down the ramp. Oh well, I tightened my game up at Waka and I'm back in the flow, Panic on the Rock is a total recall. Word!

MOE. is one of the best acts around right now. There music is amazing and there is alot of energy at the shows. Anyone who doesnt like MOE. shouldn't write about how bad they think they are or whatever b/c its all about personal preferences. And no you dont need to be all spun to see them and enjoy it.

I missed the Red Rocks show but saw them @ Bonnaroo and they are still very much on track. They did and acoustic set @ the Sonic Stage that was awesome. You can download that and the Main Stage show at bt.etree and find out for yourself. BTW they did an awesome cover of Violent Femms Big Hands @ Sonic that was so much fun.

I am going to see them all 4 nights @ the Roxy in Los Angeles and I can't wait.

I also heard that they are going to be recording a new album when they are in Los Angeles. I hope that it's a live show @ the Roxy so you can all hear me screaming in the back-round.

Moe. is definitely one of the hottest shows around these days. Right up there with String Cheese, Disco, Wide Spread, and Ratdog.

LAJammer - out!

Moe Rocked Red Rocks most definetly I'd never seen anything like that. But as for Umphrey's they kind of dissappointed me I saw the same show at the filmore last winter including layla already so I was kind of pissed that they played the same set twice in colorado. especially when playing at Red Rocks I mean come on you gotta bring your best at the old R&R amphitheatre.
