Backyard Tire Fire blazes across the USA
Backyard Tire Fire is gearing up for a big summer that will bring them firmly into the national spotlight. The band is coming off a whirlwind February and March, which found the IL roots-rocker's at SXSW, filming their first live DVD at Schubas in Chicago, finishing up their upcoming studio record, signing with national booking agency The Agency Group, and playing 25 dates in-between.
Backyard Tire Fire
Backyard Tire Fire will begin their summer on May 19th, opening for No Depression Magazine's Artist of the 1990's, Alejandro Escovedo at Chicago's Martyrs'. This will start a 2.5 month tour which will take the band from the southeast to the northwest and back to IL again. The band will be sharing dates with a diverse group of artists such as Son Volt, The Mother Hips, Alejandro Escovedo, Merle Haggard, The Radiators, Apollo Sunshine, Jerry Joseph and Marty Stuart to name a few. They will also be featured on many national festivals including Wakarusa Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, Summercamp, 10,000 Lakes Festival and Euphio Campout.
Things have been happening quickly for Backyard Tire Fire since their November 2005 release of Bar Room Semantics (OIE Records/Redeye Distribution). Writing lyrics that connect with the everyman, the band has won over critics and fans alike, Harp magazine's Aaron Kayce had this to say, "Focused around the blue-collar songwriting of Ed Anderson, the young Illinois-based trio explores the harder side of life with a simple man's brilliance that never takes itself too seriously." JamBase.com's Dennis Cook commented, "Chicago's Backyard Tire Fire plies down-in-the-cut rock so smeared with real life you'll instantly recognize yourself in their verses," and Kynd Music's Dave Terpeny wrote, "This is music that you drink to and sober up to, music that takes you places because the songwriter has been there and wrote about it."
Another strength that sets the band apart is their diverse sound. Rare in today's world of marketing driven music channels, Backyard Tire Fire is able to defy the critics' labels. IA City Press Citizen's Jim Musser says, "Ed Anderson's wry, literate lyrics recall Alabama's Drive-by Truckers or Des Moines' Brother Trucker, and while the two primary building blocks of the "alt-country" movement (Neil Young and Uncle Tupelo) are present, strong elements of Southern rock, soul, stinging funk, college rock, glam and even vintage British Invasion poke through - all with startling dynamic range and authority."
Rev. Keith Gordon of Alt.Culture sums up the band's diverse sound and earnest lyrics very nicely, "Call it Americana, call it alt-country, call it country-rock -- it won't fit easily, no matter what convenient label you want to stick on Bar Room Semantics. This is music created with a purpose and delivered with a heart and fire far too often lost on young bands eying MTV, The OC and major label deals without a future."
Whatever you want to call the band, make sure to catch them when they roll through your neighborhood this summer, as I’m sure they will.
