"Truckin' Up the Coast with Cubensis" featuring Vince Welnick

Vince Welnick
Former Grateful Dead keyboardist VINCE WELNICK to make his first West Coast appearance in years when he joins Dead tribute CUBENSIS for a series of shows beginning March 30th at the Galaxy Concert Theatre in Santa Ana.

"Hang on to your Deadheads! They may want to go back on tour after this," laughs Cubensis guitarist Craig Marshall. After an absence of many years, former Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Welnick is joining forces with renowned Dead tribute Cubensis to tour the California West Coast in a collaboration that will celebrate the best of the band's repertoire while introducing a fresh improvisational approach to the music.

Although always being true to the original tunes, the focus of this pairing will seek to explore the boundaries of the music, much as the Dead did during their 35-year reign as road warriors. Vince Welnick relates, "Recently, I've been performing almost exclusively on the East Coast, while Cubensis has served as the "Keepers of the Flame" here in California. This tour promises to be an authentic portrayal of the Dead, and seeping with San Francisco tradition... it's a dynamic combo."

Welnick is fresh off the Bacchus Krewe Mardi Gras float, having performed at the New Orleans Convention Center for a black tie Katrina Benefit along with Willie Nelson in front of 12,000 fans. "Michael Keaton was King of the parade, and our entry featured Sean Astin and Elijah Wood," says Welnick, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame along with the rest of the Grateful Dead in 1994.

This will be the third outing in as many years for Cubensis and Welnick, who performed with the Dead for five years until the band's demise in 1995. He first gained notoriety as a long-time member of the eclectic ensemble The Tubes, and has since lent his passionate vocals and chops to numerous groups on the "jam band" circuit. "I'm excited about this tour," he says. "This is an opportunity to catch a really fine band playing all your Dead favorites, plus a surprise or two."

"Doing Grateful Dead songs with Vince onstage with us is almost eerie," observes Cubensis frontman Marshall. "We're replicating the music, and he MADE the music, so it's like we're experiencing a musical double-take... it makes you shake your head, it's so good!" Since Cubensis has been saluting the Dead for 19 years, they have a vast selection of songs from which to choose, "all of which we'll be playing during this tour. No show will be the same."

The "Truckin' Up the Coast with Cubensis" tour debuts at the Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana on March 30, visits Winston's in San Diego on March 31, headlines the Ojai Classic Rock Festival on April 1, travels to Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz on April 2, appears in San Francisco at the Elbo Room on April 3, and rocks the Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa on April 4. At this point, Welnick leaves the tour due to East Coast obligations, and Cubensis continues to Mendocino's Caspar Inn on April 5, Humboldt Brews in Arcata on April 7, Downtown Brew in San Luis Obispo on April 8, and winds down at Santa Monica's 14 Below on April 9.

Opening for the entire tour is the Nate LaPointe Band, featuring rootsy and eclectic originals by the Cubensis rhythm guitarist and author of the Cherry Hill instructional video "Grateful Dead Legendary Licks."

Different than DSO. Better attitudes for sure. They aren't as full of a sound as the Orchestra, but they play with soul. Always have had a good time watching Cubensis.

Cubensis is much more true than DSO- they play what they feel and where the song takes them, as in true GD style- not what's on a setlist that they are copying for the night. They DO have much more soul and feeling in the music, that they make their own. It's unbelievable to me how many people don't know about Cubensis who go see DSO -or who are Deadheads in general. Everyone needs to come out and experience this shit! I can't wait for this tour!

I hear Barney Doyle of Mickey Hart Band will be at the Galaxy Theater show in Santa Ana as a special guest. I wouldn't be surprised if Cubensis has more surprises up their sleeve for this tour.

Although the story does not mention it, the Ojai Classic Rock Festival on April 1st features Cubensis with Vince Welnick AND Which One's Pink?, Led Zepagain, Peace Frog (a great Doors tribute), The Allmost Bros and The Neil Deal (featuring Tony Kaye, the original keyboard player in Yes!)

This tour was everything I hoped for and more. We had so much fun. Winston's in Ocean Beach had a line 50 people strong lined up when the venue reached capacity. Arcata was the same way, packed full of dancing Heads. Vince was his normal gracious self and looks forward to doing it again and again and again. I miss the road already....get me back out on tour please!

Hi everyone, Johnny the soundman for Cubensis. The tour was awesome...Thanks to all of our fans who danced between the raindrops to be there...I have just a few comments and statements about the tour and the band..Having worked with the Band for years on and off and now continually...This is what Cubensis is....and what they are not...They are at my best description, like your fantasy football team..anology..playing tribute music of The Grateful Dead and spinoff bands there from. They do not play any song note for note...copy setlists, nor strive to copy The Grateful Dead, instead try to recreate the magic and always intriging exploration, of the endless tunes the Grateful Dead created and started for us fans..They play different eras, as musicians, as The original Grateful Dead musicians might have done had they all survived...example on this latest tour, with Vince they played songs with Vince that The Grateful Dead had played before, except that with our Keyboardist Tom Ryan (played with DSO last summers tour) singing Brent like vocals...and those fantasy GD moments are always coming true, and more having a Brent like vocal on earlier PigPen tunes, and so on...So Cubensis is like...."What The Grateful Dead might be, had all the late members still be alive today..." Our goal is to bring the magic back to our fans, and bring the former members back, with us, to play and try and recreate the magic we all grew up with and came to live our lives by. Cubensis is not your average GD tribute band, and by definition Cubensis is a "Grateful Dead Music" Tribute, we play JGB tunes, Kingfish tunes, and all the spinoff groups inspired or created by members of the GD family. Never trying to trace the artwork that started all this magic. DSO does what they do, an do it awesomely, so there is no comparison...Cubensis just takes what we've all been given and tries to perpetuate on that the best we know how...So next time you feel the be free and dance with the magic that started it all...Come see Us...
you wont be disappointed...
