MMW BACK IN MORRISTOWN

Words & Images by Timothy McDonald

Medeski, Martin & Wood :: 02.23.06 :: Community Theater :: Morristown, NJ

The last time Medeski, Martin & Wood played the Community Theater of Morristown was 12.16.00. That show was the last show for that year and is known as the best from that tour. The anticipation for sets of classic tunes was felt in the crowd, but the trio was on a different page. They have just recently moved to their own record label and have recorded a follow-up album to A-Go-Go, which also happens to feature John Scofield again. Their minds were in the future more than the past. The two sets either consisted of newer material or improvisations, one never knows. However, a couple of well-received classics appeared in the second set. The sound system was outstandingly clear, and the audience remained very quiet throughout the show, making it a very pleasant evening.

Here are a few of the images from that evening. We hope you enjoy them.

super good photos capturing those fine moments during an MMW show. last saw them @ Coach House in San Juan Capistrano back in Oct. (excellent show) They should grace us w/ their presence again at the Crowbar in State College, PA!! MMW continue to generally blaze a trail through ANY kind of music scene with their progressive and original music. P.S. The new Wood Bros. album sounds GRREAT!! Check it out

I've seen alot of bands and alot of shows in my life and I've never been as consistently blown away by any band as MMW. Good god, John Medeski needs to have a shrine built for him somewhere, not to mention billy the kid keeping the beat or Mr. Wood (whose snake anthony and whatever happened to gus lines are two of my favorite in jazz history). Can't wait for them at the roo and if anyone else on this board also saw them at the Detroit Jazz Festival, you too have seen musical perfection.

Sorry for the rant, but MMW is beyond regular music, they are the saviors.

....and those 2nd set classics we compliments of my yello "coconut bugaloo" sign I had from the front row directly across from Mr. Medeski himself. I held it up after the first set and he pointed me out and smiled as he was taking a sip of chilled poland spring water. Low and behold.....BAM!!!!!Coconut Bugaloo to start the 2nd set off with a bang and all hell broke loose.....you're welcome.

Gonna do the accoustic run in april, whose commin with me?

Medeski Martin and Wood are so incredible live. The people at there shows are also very cool and unique people. Did Anyone see the Oakland show on New Years opening up for the Other Ones? It was a little after the uninvisible album came out. They had a horn section come out and play some songs from that album.... jawdropping!! Anyone who was there knows what I mean.

that was such a solid show, the only problem was the venue was a little dull and we had to fight to stay near the stage with security, but they were all old dudes so it was cool.
but mmw played SO WELL. wow. good shots man.
