Umphrey's McGee
Safety In Numbers, to be released April 4, 2006, is the third studio album by the musically muscular and relentlessly inventive Umphrey's McGee. For this highly anticipated release, personal chaos provided plenty of fuel for an explosion of collaborative, creative energy. From top to bottom, in its carefully constructed yet deeply felt notes, Safety In Numbers is strong and coolly calculated, yet easy-going and improvisational -- an aural representation of life's balancing act. Without sacrificing their endearing playfulness, Umphrey's McGee - dare we say it - is growing up.

The album's eleven original songs offer intriguing insight into these rising stars. For Safety In Numbers, the band's complex and often spectacular musicianship move from the surface of their craft, and rest instead just under the skin of the music. From top to bottom, in its carefully constructed yet deeply felt notes, Safety In Numbers is a strong and decisive, yet easy-flowing representation of Umphrey's McGee and a tribute to a friend's life in the face of a recent loss-a sonic companion to life's balancing act.

The album features guest performances by saxophone sensation Joshua Redman and veteran rocker, Huey Lewis. Album artwork is by famed album designer Storm Thorgerson.

In support of the new release, Umphrey's has announced their spring tour dates, which includes an appearance at the Langerado music festival, a quick European jaunt, a special CD release party in their hometown of Chicago, and an exclusive and intimate performance at NYC's CBGB as part of the first annual Green Apple Festival (

It's been a quick rise for Chicago's Umphrey's McGee. Their virtuoso playing and edgy songcraft recently compelled Rolling Stone to choose Umphrey's "a band to watch" in their annual Hot Issue. Relix magazine put them on the cover of their December 2004 issue and the prestigious Chicago Music Awards bestowed Umphrey's McGee with the coveted Best Rock Entertainer of the Year award. Booked coast to coast by the Monterey Peninsula Booking Agency, the band recently sold out two nights at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, two nights at Irving Plaza, San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium, the list goes on.

I just saw these guys in Nashville and they blew me away, again. I remember one of the new songs they played that night, "Eat," was pretty damn good, while the other new song they played, "Morning song," was nothing special. I assume both will be on the new album, which will be the shit.

Canada? Sorry dude, I lived there for 2 years and they are not into this music scene at all really. Sure a few people heard of the dead, but some canadian dude I spoke with actually thought Jerry Garcia was a member of the backstreet boys. Made me realize the stark difference between our two nations. Don't get me wrong, Canada is way ahead of the US in many ways (like medicare), but the music scene is completely different. Hopefully that will start to change over the next few years, as the various bands make the trek over the border. Anyway, Back to the article, I'm definitely lookin forward to seein these guys at Langerado!

This stupid Green Apple Festival is a white elephant in disguise. How am I supposed to pick between Bela Fleck, Soulive/Toots & the Maytals, Umphrey's McCBGB's, new Particle and Granola Funk Express!?!? What's next? Phish reunion at Wetlands? The list goes on and on. That's just Friday night too. I'm about to be pulling out hair. Can't thay put them all in Central Park and we'll come for the day? Good luck choosing. Damn Jammys. The world should have these problems.

Lovely. Can't wait for the new album. Anchor Drops rocked and so will Saftey in Numbers. Umphreys gets better and better as time goes on. They are starting to dominate, and should. Something that could have been seen from miles (or years) away. We want the Umph, gotta have that Umph.

I'll be looking forward to hearing the new CD. Too bad they're not coming to Phoenix on this tour. The dates they have in CA are all work days for me so I won't get to attend. :-(

Conjugal Burning

I have been down with Umph for a while, but hearing a couple new songs at the Cincy show last Thursday scared me to say the least. Excited to hear "Safety," but i really hope their blowing up is not going to their heads.

ive been a fan for a few years now, and damn have these guys matured over the last two years. they are on fire right now, from what ive heard so far the new album will be pretty good, i hope crazzylegged is right, i doubt success has gone to thier head just yet, they are just starting to get the respect they deserve, but are far from the top. go UM, and if youve never seen 'em, check them out on this tour, you will be glad you did
