DETAILS: For the 9th straight year, Sunset Promotions and Brian Martin bring the rhythm and spirit of the bayou to San Francisco for a blowout Mardi Gras Party. For the 2006 version, Sunset takes the Great American Music Hall back to its racier roots, transforming it into a steamy French Quarter Tavern, complete with Mardi Gras beads, hurricanes, and the funky, savory music of the Louisiana Bayou. This year's event will feature two sets of space porn funk by Particle, plus live burlesque carnavale performance by Hot Pink Feathers, a 2nd line parade provided by Jazz Mafia Brass Band, and a journey through New Orleans funk with Motion Potion.

Particle is poised to return to the stage this spring with a fresh lineup, new material, a tour, and a DVD. The band enjoyed a stellar year in 2005 both at home and abroad, balancing performances at Bonnaroo, Summerfest, New Orleans Jazzfest, and Wakarusa with return trips to England and the Netherlands. Las year also saw Particle teaming up with the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart to form Hydra for a national tour. After parting ways with guitar player Charlie Hitchcock, the band has been focusing on writing new material, auditioning guitar players, and preparing for the next phase in their evolution. For this, their debut performance with the new lineup, the band has a few surprises in-store, including a "New Orleans medley" guaranteed to drop jaws.

Where Carnaval meets Cabaret--Hot Pink Feathers—the world's premiere samba burlesque troupe. Founded in 2000 by the award-winning shimmy-shaker Kelly "Kellita" Garton, these sassy dancing darlings are spreading the gospel of glitter from Frisco to the Big Apple and beyond. A little sugar and a lot of spice, their colorful, Latin-flavored bump 'n' grind has made them "leaders on the scantily-clad front" according to Theatre Bay Area. The Feathers recently earned First Place in Original World Dance at SF's Grand Carnaval 2005.

The "Jazz Mafia" is a collection of San Francisco's finest jazz players, led by trombonist/bassist Adam Theis and sax/pianist Joe Cohen. In various formats from the huge Realistic Orchestra to the stripped-down Shotgun Wedding Quintet, the Jazz Mafia is pushing jazz forward in San Francisco. For Mardi Gras, they have morphed into a traditional New Orleans-style marching band for a 2nd-line parade, stage performance and some choreographed shenanigans with the Hot Pink Feathers.

Motion Potion has been called "the DJ for people who hate DJ's" for his unique attempts to merge every genre into an evening, a set, or a mashup. With recent performances at Bonnaroo, Vegoose, and Xingolati, this local dj seems to be going national.
