Driving into a quiet town made for an inviting beginning to this unassuming evening. I've never been to Chico before - so chill and refreshing. The leaves were actually different colors up there! It really IS autumn afterall. After checking out what was going on at Brickworks (GREAT lookin' place with a DUAL disco ball scene) during set break of the Dark Star Orchestra show, we headed down to La Salle's to get into the pre-9 vibe. Upon entering this place, we were greeted by maybe 15 people hanging out drinking the yummy $5.50 pitchers of brew. It's mellow...
Up on stage was this beautiful glowing songstress. Her name was Brandy - a friend of the Sector 9 family from Georgia. She was singing wonderful melodies with Jeff patting gently behind her on his bongos. I was delighted when she started to sing "If I Could!"
The Sound Tribe took the stage and there were literally 5 people on the dance floor. For the next 2 hours or so, the room entered a dream. Even at set break, we seemed to be on another planet. This being my first Sector 9 show since the Justice League show in late August, it definitely seems like they've been playing a lot! They sounded so tightly beautiful. The healing powers were turned up at least 40%. They played some relatively older favorites and great new ones from their latest release, Offered Schematics, Suggesting Peace (Click Here To Buy). Highlights were "T.W.E.L.V.E.", "Lub duh earf", and "Some Are Angels". Some are definitely angels - I think we know a few...
By the end of the show, there was the usual frenzied mass of dancers on the floor. Folks that came from the other show or off the street. Or maybe there were those phone calls like, "Hey man, you gotta get down here." Regardless, it was very roomy in there and it was as if we had discovered a hidden gold mine. As we all know, this band is going to explode exponentially and so I'm glad I got to see this low key, mellow yet inspiring show in this heady heady
town in No. Cal.
Damn it's good to have those boys back here in Cali. I've decided to make this week a "Nothing but 9 Week!" If I'm going to see live music this week, it's going to be 9 or nothing at all. Looking forward to the Santa Cruz/SF shows this weekend!
