Louis the XIV sound like a band out of New York City, London, or these days, Montreal. The fact that they hail from the sunny city of San Diego does nothing to lighten the hard-driving guitar and punchy drums of Illegal Tender. The five song EP was released ahead of this spring's full length The Best Little Secrets are Kept and is a refreshing departure from the increasingly average sounds littering the indie landscape. This small taste of their sound delivers kick, punch, and more than the occasional drunken swagger of a song. Louis the XIV care less about the hot sound from London and New York and more about paying homage to bands like The Clash, Bowie, and T-Rex.

"Finding Out Love is Blind" drives like an old car with a new engine - a familiar seat to sit in coupled with a fresh and youthful acceleration. On the title track "Illegal Tender," I found myself doing the pogo stick to the sing-song lyrics provided by lead singer Brian Karscig, while checking the calendar to keep my mind in 2005. The mellower "Marc" channels a 70's era Bowie while lending the look of Polyphonic Spree/Ween-like lyrics to the mix. In the end, this is an EP, and while it reflects the future, sometimes the future is so bright you can't see what's ahead.

My advice, get involved.
