Surprise Me Mr. Davis is a band comprised of Brad Barr [guitar, vocals], Andrew Barr [drums] and Marc Friedman [bass] of The Slip, and poet/songwriter Nathan Moore [guitar, vocals]. This will be their second tour with this ensemble, which hatched as a studio project during a 2003 blizzard. The result of these snowed-in sessions was the record Surprise Me, Mr. Davis (Frogville Records), named after a candid answering machine message from a wrong number. The ensemble also released one live show, digital download only through DiscLogic, from their last tour together.
Combining the adventurous musical visions of The Slip with the songwriting and delivery of Nathan Moore has resulted in a rolling and tumbling musical dice game; a vaudeville rock band gone mad. There is, however, more than enough charm to win the farmer's daughter. Golden heart throb, meowskers, accompanied by The Slip's Marc Friedman, will kick off each night of the tour.
The Slip's continuing ability to create an atmosphere and a journey through song and show has garnered them a large, growing audience, and has taken them around the world. Each member is a contributing multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who brings unique colors to The Slip's canvas. Their music is characterized by combining intriguing and familiar songwriting with the ability to improvise freely; deep and steady grooves giving way to deconstructionist polyrhythmic cacophony; sophisticated harmony breeding simple release; and simple lyrical images taking on new meaning in front of a variety musical backdrops. All are effortlessly married under The Slip's umbrella.
As troubadours go, they don't come much truer than Nathan Moore. Nathan has a genuine communion with the lyric and craft of song, and an emotive and experienced voice influenced largely by Dylan, Tom Waits, Bukowski, Leonard Cohen, and years of travel. He got his start in Staunton, Virginia, and went on to help form the ThaMuseMeant, a folk/rock/burlesque band that has released many albums, toured the country, and played the H.O.R.D.E tour.
