Future Rock is a young, electrifying Chicago-based band grinding it out on the frostbitten, murky plains of the Midwest — steadily developing a refined and distinctive sound along with a dedicated following during their journey. Consisting of Felix Moreno on bass, Mickey Kellerman on keyboards, and Darren Heitz on drums, Future Rock exhibits an uncommon grasp of minimalist, yet visceral, rock. Skillfully manipulating live loops, synthesizers, filters, and an electronic drum kit, the trio succeeds in creating a larger-than-life sound that sends crowds twirling. Their performance Friday, February 18th, at Subterranean in Chicago was no exception.

An extremely raw version of their original acid-house composition, "Narrow Bridge" caused almost everyone in attendance to take a step back. FR slowed it down next, breaking into the catchy "Jesus Would Get the Bigger Speakers," a clever original bespeaking the quirky irreverence of this trio. Things really started heating up amidst a raucous version of the sophisticated dance piece, "Broken Glass," during which a monitor right behind the drummer burst (read: exploded) into flame! The light show was in full effect at this point, and Moreno's request for a fire extinguisher ("Hey! We're on FIRE!") elicited cheers from the frenzied crowd.
After a brief intermission to hose down the amp, Future Rock iced things down with a cover of "A Beautiful Place Out in the Country" by Boards of Canada. The band then segued into the house-driven "FM1," re-igniting the crowd. The next song, "Cosmos," showcased the composition skills of this exciting trio as a stunning Moog melody soared over a mixed-meter backbone and then exploded into a refined dance groove. Pandemonium ensued as FR busted out funky fan favorite "Astro Butter," during which Moreno displayed his extraordinary slap-bass talent. FR closed out the evening with an extra-dirty "Aftershocks," and the sweaty and dazed crowd was corralled out onto the cold and cruel Chicago streets, frightening innocent bystanders by yelling about how Jesus woulda got the bigger speakers! Future Rock will hopefully ponder WWJD and invest in a new, larger, speaker before continuing their Spring Tour:
