Two Gallants by Mason Tullinger |
As a follow up to the Two Gallants' sold-out headlining show at the Bottom of the
Hill on December 30th in San Francisco, Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel will return from a U.S. tour to headline San Francisco's Independent. This show is a part of Noisepop 2005, which also features Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Joanna Newsom, Portastatic, Polyphonic Spree, and the Walkmen amongst others.
Attempting to define the formula that makes this band is an almost
impossible feat. The folk-punk-blues moniker may be the closest
but what original band likes labels? Their influences range from
backcountry blues musicians of the '20s and '30s like Skip James,
Robert Wilkins, and Clarence Ashley to more recent Bay Area punk
bands like Hickey and Operation Ivy. They channel the spirit of
early Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, with the fingerpicking
prowess of John Fahey combined with a modern punk sensibility. As Madison Capital Times put it, "If punk music had been
invented in Oklahoma in the 1930s, it would sound something like
this San Francisco duo."
Two Gallants continue to tour in support of their debut release,
The Throes, out on Alive Records as well as their new 7" single
I'm Her Man. The record continues to reach new people and
press receiving an 8.5 from Pitchfork, 3 stars from Rolling Stone, a
slew of positive interviews and reviews from San Francisco Bay
Guardian, the San Francisco Weekly, Soma, Harp, Devil In The
Woods, The Onion, Time Out New York, Pop Matters, Performer
Magazine, Meanstreet, Zero Magazine and made several year-end
top 10 lists and was nominated by SF Weekly as Best Rock Band of
2004.
