Karl Denson's Tiny Universe :: 12.11.04 :: House of Blues :: Chicago, IL

KDTU by Adam George

What better place to kick out a night full of jazz, blues, funk and soul than at the blues capital of the world, Chicago's House of Blues? Something about the black-lit paint along the HOB's regal balconies tends to bring the best out in musicians, and on December 11th Karl Denson's Tiny Universe nearly took the paint off.

With a packed house and a local blues musician from the Windy City in the wings, Karl set the stage for a heated evening of music for the mind and body. Always an energetic entertainer, Karl made a promise that the Tiny Universe were going to kick it, and kick it they did.

As usual, KDTU ran the gamut from Chicago blues to New Orleans funk and kept the crowd moving. But this show seemed different. While there were the occasional moments where the music slowed so that everyone could catch his or her breath, this was the most upbeat Karl Denson show I've seen in a long time.

Karl and his Tiny Universe have been hard at work trying to stretch beyond the boundaries of groove jazz, and this was definitely evident in Chicago. Mixing classic tunes like "So Satisfied" with newer and more modern sounds, the ups and downs of the evening seemed more deliberately placed than ever. Karl's drive was vibrant, the synergy in the band radiant and nonstop. Sporting a cowboy hat atop his head, Karl was anything but lazy and laid back, working hard to provide the experience that KDTU shows have been known to deliver.

From top to bottom, the show was in-your-face-down-and-dirty-late-night-New-Orleans-Jazz-Fest-style KDTU. And the only thing that was lacking from some of the most epic Karl shows to ever blow up was the fact that the sun was still down when we left the venue.
