Ropeadope.com: Since 2001, the Brooklyn based independent record label, Ropeadope, has been host to the New Music Seminar, a bi-annual concert event featuring the label's biggest names, brightest stars and closet friends. The theme is always "no rules" as bands and musicians mix and match to create one long (four-hour), inter-locking set with surprises and excitement at every turn.
Since its inception, the New Music Seminar has never been duplicated and nobody, including the artists, know what to expect - except for the unexpected. Past participants have included John Medeski, John Scofield, Amp Fidler, Jason Moran, Vernon Reid, Warren Haynes, Living Colour, Dj Logic, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Dave Matthews, Robert Randolph and many more.
Improvisation, unique pairings of musicians and special guests always create an intriguing level of buzz. This fall's RADNMS tour will be no different, as the genres represented are no easy fit. From classical music's brightest young star cellist Matt Haimovitz, to under ground hip-hop hero Lyrics Born; guitar virtuoso Charlie Hunter to beat master DJ Olive; from the jazz of Downtown New York City (Sex Mob) to the purveyors of improv in Downtown Seattle (Critters Buggin); from the organ and drums rock duo of Benevento/Russo, to Philly's most respected poet, Big Rich Medina. There is no doubt the Ropeadope New Music Seminar has created an exciting arena to bridge the musical gap between fans.
In addition to the conventional tour schedule, the seminar will stop at several universities along the way including University of Iowa, University of Colorado and University of Utah, with the intent to connect musically with the kids today. "With the R.I.A.A suing students over the past few years and the constant debate over file-sharing and burning, we want to open up dialogue with the kids, show them respect on their own terms. Ropeadope New Music Seminar wants to spread the seed of understanding," explains Andy Blackman Hurwitz, Ropeadope label founder and New Music Seminar curator. "All of these artists are working-class musicians who understand the struggle to pay rent every month. Most have families to feed and live in accordance to the swings of the music industry. We want to give a face and a voice to that struggle as well as hear the students' perspective of the industry today."
The Ropeadope New Music Seminar will kick off with two East Coast dates and then swing through the Mid-West and West Coast. More information can be found at www.ropeadope.com/nms.
