TRANSCENDENTAL HAYRIDE READY FOR THE SPOTLIGHT

"Calling Transcendental Hayride an alt-country outfit or just another jam band is like calling David Bowie just another rock musician." -SF Examiner

Transcendental Hayride by Angie Cassemento
Rock and roll... two words that are the driving force behind the band Transcendental Hayride. Hailing from the Haight Ashbury District of San Francisco, these five men are on a mission to rekindle the ferocity and sonic dimensions of a bygone era of music. Mixing everything from traditional country and bluegrass arrangements to heavy bone-crunching riffs and experimental electronica, this band considers themselves to be at their best when on the stage.

Originally from West Lafayette Indiana, songwriter, lead singer and rhythm guitarist Dano Kildsig made the move out to California in the early '90s. His first project on the West Coast was as the co founder of the L.A. hard rock quintet New Improved God. Later, along with fellow band mate Kurt Moss, he conceived and gave birth to Transcendental Hayride. After several years on the L.A. circuit, the group disbanded and Dano moved to San Francisco with the notion of continuing to release albums under the Hayride name. After a string of various musicians and players, Dano was able to convince Kurt to return to the West Coast and rejoin the ride in San Francisco. Dano brings to the table a pop-savvy mixture of sensible songwriting and colorful lyricism, along with a strong background in psychedelia and electronica.

Kurt Moss, lead guitarist of the Hayride, found his way to L.A. from Whiteville, N.C. He met and became lasting friends with Dano while pursuing an education in music. After years of playing in both New Improved God and Transcendental Hayride, Kurt decided to return to his home state and pursue other avenues of music. After a few years of steady musical experimentation, Kurt was convinced to move to San Francisco and begin his new journey in the Hayride. Kurt is a dynamic guitarist who wields a true Southern grit in his playing. He adds a shimmering edge and vitality to the already improvisational stature of the Hayride.

Keyboardist and songwriter Brackett Clark was discovered by Dano at a local concert just months after moving to San Francisco from the L.A. area. As a veteran musician, Brackett (or Kitt as he is often known to friends) is a direct transplant from the L.A. band Free Range Chickens, with which he toured and played for almost a decade. Kitt is a truly accomplished classical pianist who adds a layered sophistication and charm to the structure and melodies of the Hayride.

Bassist Nick Massaro arrived in San Francisco, along with drummer Jack McFadden, in the latter part of 2002. As close friends having grown up together in Wooster, Ohio, these two have been a musical duo since the late '80s. After years in the Cleveland hard rock band Lazy Angels, the two moved to California in a steady pursuit of musical expansion. Boasting the ability to move an audience with a certain groove and stability, these two were quickly brought aboard the Hayride to round off the remaining edges.

Like Bowie, Transcendental Hayride are willing to take risks that most others aren't. They pepper the traditional honky tonk recipe--blues, country and folk--with vintage psychedelic rock flourishes and a dash of electronica. Too bad barn dances and hoedowns are things of the past because this updated string-band's hybrid heady country-funk is just the thing to get modern day dosey-doers out on the floor.
