Tucked back in the green, grassy hills of Marin County alongside the serene Stafford Lake, the Promise for Peace Festival will host The Mix, Hamsa Lila, Wavy Gravy and dozens of other performers. High Sierra Music Festival alums and newcomers like Reorchestra, Samantha Lee, Garrin Benfield, Aphrodesia, and Hyim will perform along with circus acts, dancers, and much more. The Promise for Peace Festival celebrates peaceful living, honoring indigenous life ways and serving as a benefit event for the annual Indigenous Elders and Youth Peace Gathering.
The Mix features Melvin Seals, Kevin Rosen, and John Kadlecik of Dark Star Orchestra, Greg Anton of Zero and Paul Murin of Phix performing their own original songs, as well as new originals by the legendary Robert Hunter. Building on the momentum of the recent run of sold-out West Coast Dark Star Orchestra shows, this union of jam-rock superstars makes Promise for Peace the place to be for an exciting kick-off to the festival season.
Dark Star Orchestra guitarist John Kadlecik says of The Mix, “I value the opportunity to work with Melvin Seals. I’ve learned a lot of JGB material with Dark Star Orchestra, and Melvin and I share a common background in a particular repertoire. I look at The Mix as a forum to see where the roads not taken can lead. In DSO we improvised within the structure provided. The Mix will be about exploration, stylistic experimentation. It will be exciting to see how it evolves.”
After years with the Jerry Garcia Band, Melvin Seals is well known for his devastatingly funky Hammond B-3 chops which truly shine in The Mix. Don't count on Melvin to restrain himself with this fresh new band. "I’m looking forward to this project more than any other I’ve ever worked on," says Melvin, "simply because it’s an all-star cast playing the best of Jerry and Dead covers and originals so you never know what to expect. I’ve been holding back up until now with some of my finest originals. I’ve been waiting for this event to happen. This is the right moment.” Don't mistake those words from Jerry's longtime band mate!
Just north of San Francisco, this lakeside festival is a landmark event hosting fantastic music, art, dance, good natural foods, and peaceful living. The Mix and many others have joined together to make this special grassroots event a unique experience gathering together the diverse members of our growing global peace movement including Starhawk, Kevin Danaher of Global Exchange, Native American storyteller Robert Greygrass, Native American elder Corbin Harney, The Mystic Family Circus, and many others.
Give peace a dance, sisters and brothers!
