John Scofield Trio LIVE: EnRoute

John Scofield is a legendary guitar player in both jazz and jam circles. His latest release with his trio (Scofield on guitar, Steve Swallow on electric bass, and Bill Stewart on drums) is a high-energy jazz album which is perfect listening either in a smoky jazz club or on a sunny Sunday morning.

Recorded at The Blue Note in New York City in December of 2003, the album shows off Scofield's prowess on his instrument and proves his band mates are no slouches either. Whether they are sweetly covering Burt Bacharach's "Alfie," driving through Denzil Best's "Wee," or playing one of the other original Scofield compositions (or the one by Swallow), the trio delivers jazzy-rock fusion at its best. The interplay between the musicians reaches frantic climaxes at times, yet the album slows to quieter introspective moments too. Most of the instrumentals clock in between six and 12 minutes, with lots of improvised exploration.

Recommended for all fans of the great John Scofield's guitar, especially if they like the jazz/funk A Go Go CD he did with Medeski Martin & Wood, or for folks who like their jazz with a rock orientation.
