Northwest String Summit’s all-star line up also features The
Del McCoury Band, the Grammy-nominated, International Bluegrass Music Association
eight-time Entertainer of the Year, member of the legendary Grand Ole Opry,
and the "first family of bluegrass."
A rare performance by The David
Bromberg String Band creates an eclectic musical journey through several
uniquely American music forms. Mindy Smith is one of the fastest rising singer-songwriters
today gaining national prominence from her recent rendition of Dolly Parton’s
“Jolene.” Whether performing solo acoustic, at a festival, or on
national television, Mindy Smith has an undeniable ability to captivate the
listener with her unique vocal delivery and emotionally driven songs.
For twenty-five years, Darol
Anger has been reinventing the American string ensemble to incorporate his
own explorations into traditional American, bluegrass, jazz, and world music.
Darol Anger’s American Fiddle Ensemble re-defines the limits of the string
quartet.
Jeff Austin and
Chris Castino of
the Yonder Mountain String Band and The Big Wu, respectively, first met four
years ago and recently came together to record their debut album Songs from
the Tin Shed (Frog Pad Records, 2004). Split
Lip Rayfield will whip crowds into a sweaty frenzy performing on a gas-tank
bass, mandolin, guitar, and banjo mixed with four-part harmonies.
Hot Buttered Rum String Band will resonate the natural amphitheater at Horning’s
Hideout with their unique "high altitude bluegrass." Performing
late night sets will be old-time string band troubadours High
on the Hog and the upbeat jazzy bluegrass of Snake
Oil Medicine Show.
In addition to the top-tier professional talent, the Northwest String Summit
will also feature an Amateur Band Competition that provides a judged showcase
opportunity for selected up and coming artists. The winner of the 2003 NWSS
Band Competition, fiddle prodigy Brittany Haas, will be performing her own set
of incendiary fiddle music at the festival, as well as performing with Darol
Anger’s American Fiddle Ensemble.
Tree-lined Horning’s Hideout is the perfect serene setting for an
intimate weekend of all acoustic music. Located just 35 minutes west of Portland
and nestled in a hidden canyon, Horning's is truly one of Oregon’s best
keep secrets.
The event is all ages and children under 10 years old are free with a paying
adult. The 2004 Northwest String Summit is a rain or shine event. A three-day
festival pass is $105 if purchased before June 24, and includes music, on-site
