NORTHEAST WEEKEND ROUNDUP

This weekend is a big one in New England for top-notch live music - if you live north of the Big Apple there is no reason for you to miss out on the full buffet of good music being offered up over the next few days. The biggest news of the weekend has to be that the Phish touring train is pulling out of the great Northeast. There are four shows in 5 days: Friday and Saturday in Albany at the Pepsi Center and Monday and Tuesday at the Tweeter Center/Great Woods in Mansfield, MA. While all four shows are sold out, people on various ticket boards and newsgroups seem to have extras they are trying to get rid of. Seeing as Phish will be hightailing it out of the Northeast soon after these dates and further considering that they are not playing any late Fall or New Years' shows, if you have a hankering to see the undisputed kings of the scene, now is the time.

Aside from Phish there are numerous other musical happenings this weekend. The Other Ones play the Hartford Civic Center on Saturday night with Ziggy Marley opening for them. [JamBase Ticket Giveaway] Saturday night in Boston finds the wonderfully unique music of the Gypsy Kings at the Fleet Boston Pavillion. The Gypsy Kings are skilled and original live musicians who deserve to be supported far more than pop vocalists from Florida.

My concert of the week however goes to Toots And The Maytals. They are playing a free (albeit 21+) show at Lupos in Providence on Sunday night and they are playing the next night at Hot Tin Roof in Edgartown, MA. With Sunday being the day off on Phish tour, and Providence being closer to the Tweeter Center than Boston, there is no good reason for anyone on Phish tour to miss this show. Toots' brand of upbeat reggae is inspiring and musically impressive. Furthermore, the energy Toots puts out at his shows is incredible, especially considering that he is a contemporary of Bob Marley.

Be sure to check back right here at JamBase next week for in-depth reviews of the New England Phish shows.
