The West Coast is in for a treat February 4-8 as Sam Kininger, one of New York City's most renowned alto saxmen, pays a visit with his own original funk band.
Best known for his work with soul jazz/funk masters Lettuce and Soulive, Kininger and his band, featuring Nikki Glaspie on drums, Mike Finegold on guitar and Aaron Belamy, on bass, are touring in support of Sam Kininger's self-titled debut EP.
Sam Kininger by Greg Aiello
Kininger has developed a distinctive, organic sound on the saxophone that is strongly expressive and is best described as heavy, rhythmic, and pure. Kininger consistently demonstrates his technical dexterity and rhythmic precision while maintaining his honest and innovative exploration of musical improvisation.
Supporting Kininger on these dates is JB and the Rebellion, whose exhilarating sax/organ sound pays homage to the soul jazz, blues, and funk of the late 1960s and early 1970s while pushing jazz and groove music forward into the future. The Los Angeles-based sextet has also recently released a self-titled album that clearly displays the talent and future this band has.
Joel Bowers, the namesake and leader of the Rebellion, is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and has recently moved to Los Angeles where he completed the soulful recording with many of his funky friends including Chris Stillwell, Chuck Prada, Mister Rourke, and Robert Walter.
One of the busiest musicians in town, Bowers is currently producing a debut recording of the ten-piece funky music machine, Greasy Beats.
