"...a smarter, more harmonically involved band that never stays
locked in a single groove. Its Meters meets Miles approach, though
certainly tailored for the crossover, jam band set, was of the type
that would be equally attractive to more discriminating listeners."
--Bill Kohlhaase, L.A. Times

All good things eventually come to an end. And GREAT things
as well, such as the acclaimed Seattle-based band Zony Mash.
Formed was in 1995 by Wayne Horvitz, Zony Mash became the
unofficial house band at the OK Hotel (RIP) for several years, right from the get-go. Although named after an obscure Meters tune,
Zony Mash is nevertheless *not* a Meters tribute group. They play
original music (and a few well-chosen covers) that mixes elements of
avant-rock, jazz, funk and the '60's/'70's San Francisco sound. Zony
Mash is Wayne Horvitz on Hammond B-3 organ and keyboards, Timothy
Young on electric guitar, Keith Lowe on bass and Andy Roth on drums.
Zony Mash has toured numerous
times on the west coast, has done three US tours and has also played
in Europe and Iceland. Four Zony Mash CDs are available: Cold Spell
(1997), Brand Spankin' New (1998) and Upper Egypt (2000), all
out on Knitting Factory Records (www.knittingfactory.com).
Their most recent CD, Live In Seattle (2002), was released on
Liquid City Records (www.liquidcity.com).

"If they're not slipping in the Mississippi mud on the hard-chugging
"Second Time Around," they're down in the rec room doing the twist
to the primitivistic guitar licks on "The Blue Rose." ...It's the mix
of funk and fun that gives Upper Egypt the edge." --James Hale,
