NEW YORK, October 24, 2003 – Last week at the The Knitting Factory in New York City, Dick Clark, other notable industry experts and a public online vote chose The Bomb Squad to receive the third annual Coca-Cola New Music Award. The New York City based band will next take the stage and perform in front of millions of television viewers and an on-site audience of major music industry executives on the 31st Annual American Music Awards. The three hour awards show will be televised live on ABC-TV, November 16 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The show will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and will include live performances by Britney Spears, Outkast, Metallica and Alan Jackson, among others.
“This has been such a wild ride, I think we’re all still in shock,” said The Bomb Squad singer Jen Durkin. “You spend so long waiting for something like this to happen, and when it actually does, it’s pretty overwhelming. This is an unbelievable opportunity, and we definitely plan to make the most of it.”
Judges for the finalist playoff included Dick Clark, Robert Haber, CEO and founder of CMJ and Scott Booker, Owner and Managing Director of Hellfire Enterprises Ltd. which manages emerging artists like The Flaming Lips. Fans were also given the opportunity to log onto www.newmusicaward.com, listen to the finalists’ music and vote for their favorite to help determine the winner. The final online votes were tallied and counted as one vote along with those of the judges. The other finalist bands were Elcodrive from Boston, MA and relax to paris from Sherman Oaks, CA.
“It is bands like these three extremely talented acts that bring life to new music and the music industry,” said Dick Clark. “When faced with talent like this, choosing one winner is extremely challenging. Winning this award is hopefully just the first step in a long and successful career in music for The Bomb Squad.”
The Bomb Squad considers itself a mesh of many styles of music, drawing from hip hop, jazz, rock and funk for their signature sound, which is driven by a pounding groove and a full horn section.
