The Motet | September 28, 2003 | The Crossroads Music Hall | Huntsville, AL
Last weekend, our fair city was graced with the performances of both The String Cheese Incident and The Motet, and all in the same night! I spent much of the weekend in Atlanta for the fabulous Fox Theatre SCI shows, but then headed home to Huntsville, AL on Sunday for what was to be the highlight of my weekend.
The Cheese sets at Big Spring Jam were great (better than Friday night's show I think), and to top it off, the guys from The Motet got up for the first couple of songs of the second set. They started off with "Under African Skies," which is always beautiful, but with those drum masters The Motet backing the band, it had an extra kick that night. Song two was Freedom Jazz Dance, another hit with me. Bill Nershi made mention of their show following the Jam at The Crossroads (as well as a little trivia fact that The Motet played he and Jill's wedding).

I don't think I was quite prepared for what I was about to see, and this being their first trip to Huntsville, I don't think anyone really was. I saw the band about a year and a half ago at an after Cheese show in Nashville and was immediately impressed. But this time was phenomenal!! Non-stop groove from first song to encore. As a local head and regular at Crossroads, I know this bar has NEVER seen a show so good, and the crowd totally reflected it. Wall to wall people from stage to door all groovin' like there was no tomorrow. A Crossroads crowd has never begged for an encore like that. Their drum jam towards the end of the set I thought (and hoped) was never going to end. And their entire set was airtight!
So many people came up to me and thanked me during and after the show for pointing them in our direction. Good shows in Huntsville are few and far between, and even when we have them it's hard to get people to support them. Luckily, I got a chance to talk with Dave and Scott (drums and percussion) and thank them for coming and putting on such an incredible show. They thanked us for being such a fun and enthusiastic crowd (but it's hard not to be when it's The Motet on stage).
Now on Wednesday, my legs are still aching and I think I may have hyper-extended my right knee from dancing so hard, but friends and I are still talking about the best show of the weekend being at our quaint little bar in Huntsville.
