NEDFEST 2003 | HIGH UP IN THE ROCKIES

Nedfest 2003High up in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, three thousand feet above Boulder, is the small town of Nederland and the site of the Nederland Music and Arts Festival. Now in its fifth year, NedFest has a tradition of great live music in a very intimate setting (tickets are limited to 2,000/day). Past acts have included Yonder Mountain String Band, Keller Williams, The Motet, Vinyl, The Slip and a host of others well-known in the jamband scene. This year is no exception as Michigan Mike has assembled an all-star cast of bands to participate in the two-day journey through all realms of music. The festival gets under way with a stellar lineup on Saturday including Vinyl, The Motet, Garaj Mahal, WookieFoot, Stanley Jordan (both solo and with Nederland Acid Jazz) and Black Frames featuring the maniacal sax stylings of Skerik.

Not to be outdone by Saturday, Sunday treats us to Tony Furtado and the American Gypsies, The Big Wu, Robert Walter's 20th Congress featuring Will Bernard, Shanti Groove, and the Matt Flinner and Ross Martin Band with twenty minute 'tweener acts all weekend.

If you know these bands you understand the weekend's potential; if you've never heard of them you should perhaps stop reading this and go buy tickets immediately. It's a bluegrass, world beat, jazz concert pulsing with many unique sounds I refer to as "popsicle jazz": cool, refreshing and delicious with the potential to make your tongue feel composed of prickly velvet hairs ruled by static electricity in freshly balloon-wafted air. There are certain expectations, so be warned. Patrons are expected to "Be prepared to smile, laugh, listen, have fun and dance." If you are not willing to abide to these parameters as I have described them here, then please refrain from convening around the shores of Barker Reservoir in Nederland, CO during the first weekend of August.

Discount tickets for the weekend are available through June 14th online at SCITicketing.com, in person or over the phone at the Boulder Theater (303.449.9630), Quixote's True Blue Cafe in Denver (720.570.8249), Nederland's Tungsten Grill (303.258.9231), and the Redstone Meadery in Boulder (720.406.1215).

Gates open each day at 10:00am, music gets underway at 11:00am and ends at 9:00pm Saturday, August 2nd and 8:30pm Sunday, August 3rd.
