This April 26th, Haymaker Productions will hit Virginia with its five-pronged punch featuring headliner Keller Williams and late-night rockers Tea Leaf Green. Freek Fest 2: Acoustic Boogaloo will not be first time scenic Oakley Farm plays host to the concert crowd. This bash follows in the footsteps of the All Good Festival, Freek Fest 1 and the Haymaker Festival.
Local promoters Jonas and Thomas Beals, the masterminds behind Haymaker Productions, aim to ensure that they have even more to offer the fans this year, particularly in the music department. While this "Acoustic Booglaoo" will again showcase the freakish talents of local boy Keller Williams, the rest of the lineup has also taken on that hometown feel with Virginia natives The Lowboys, Larry Keel and the Hackensaw Boys all playing support to the headliner. Once the Virginia troubadours give the hometown fans what they want, San Francisco natives Tea Leaf Green will crank up the energy late into the night with their powerful version of jamband rock ‘n’ roll.
The gates open at noon on Saturday, allowing concertgoers to roll through the festival grounds and assemble campsites if desired. Parking and camping are both offered free with a festival ticket. The music starts at 3:00pm with The Lowboys, who will get the groove going, while soothing your soul with their cool Southern sounds. Larry Keel hits the stage at 4:30 to amaze you with his incredibly tight flat-picking in the bluegrass style. Then the Hackensaw Boys will stomp, sway and knee-slap their way into your feet-tapping vibe at 6:00pm. As Pee Paw Hackensaw said himself, "Great music on a beautiful Virginia farm, what more can I say, but Yeeeee Hawww!" The original Hackensaw take on a diverse repertoire of vocal harmonies and traditional tunes that will lead you on a journey from the warm spring day into the cool Virginia night.
Keller Williams headlines the festival at 9:00pm, looping his brand of one-man acoustical jams into two full sets of music. K-Dub has recently enjoyed some well-deserved popularity, but is always more than happy to play a show that's so close to home that he'll still get to sleep in his own bed. As Keller recently told JamBase, "I love Fredericksburg, I love Freaks and I love hay in my sandals. Bring it on!" Returning as the repeat headliner for Freek Fest 2, Keller will be sure to take his musical journey to new heights for the endearingly loyal local locos.
Tea Leaf Green will hit the stage as soon as Keller has twirled the last of the freekers by the speakers. Although TLG still remains relatively unknown in the Virginia backwoods, Josh Clark's searing hollow-bodied guitar work, Ben Chambers' thumpingly progressive bass lines, and Trevor Garrod’s melodic keyboard assaults will aim to leave a lasting impression on the local crowd. The beatific simplicity of Tea Leaf Green's verses, which lie in due contrast to their complex rhythmic jams will lead you on a funky rock and roll late night journey. With a two-set billing, you can be sure that Tea Leaf Green plans to tear it up until the wee morning hours.
When it all comes together, Freek Fest 2 will do its best to meet Haymaker Production's "All-Encompassing World-Saving Mission #1," namely: "to build communities out of music" with these three imperatives always in mind:
1) To give fans a safe and enlightening enviro-musical experience.
2) To design their events with conservation, preservation and the best environmental practices in mind.
3) To create an event that will be mutually beneficial to Haymaker Productions and the local area.
Haymaker is poised to build upon past festivals and remains even more excited about their prospects for Freek Fest 2. Jonas Beals noted, "It's a great challenge to try to put together a fantastic festival while still keeping it relatively small, intimate and affordable. Basically, this is a logical expansion upon the precedent set by last year's event - not too much, not too little. It's just right, and we're feeling as good as can be about what we've put together this year."
