MAX CREEK: SAFE AND SOUND

Last Saturday, Scott Murawski received the worst news a parent can hear: his daughter is missing. Fourteen year-old Asia Murawski was last seen that night at a concert put on by Scott’s band, Max Creek. After a harrowing three day search by family, friends, local law enforcement, and even the FBI, many prayers were answered as Asia was found to be safe and sound with an employee of the venue on April 1st. With his family back in order, the veteran rocker is now preparing to make a stop through the Rockies before heading back home to the Northeast.

So what’s the deal with Max Creek? Truth be told, they are a band that does not receive much exposure outside of the Northeast. Mike Gordon has referred to Max Creek as one of his “favorite bands,” and has backed up his words by sitting in with the band several times over the past few years. Scott Murawski, the guitarist and inspiration behind the band, has been fine-tuning his sound for the past thirty years and is one of the most talented guitarists on the scene today. In the summer of 1999, Murawski joined Phish in Massachusetts for their encore performance of “Tuesday’s Gone” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. For those unfamiliar with the song, it is perhaps more widely recognized as the main theme song from Happy Gilmore.

Max Creek is a band that will throw some curve balls during its live performances. With a setlist that boasts literally hundreds of songs, the band often opts for covers of the Grateful Dead as well as traditional folk songs, but truly makes the song their own by steering the jam in an unexpected direction. While the label of “a Dead cover band” has hounded them over the years, the band has already established itself in the Northeast as a force to be reckoned with. With a sound that ranges from blues to over-the-edge hard rock, Max Creek is a group that has been deeply rooted in improvisation from the beginning. The band features a trio that has been improvising together for over three decades: Mark Mercier on keys, John Rider on bass, and Murawski, who will occasionally bust out the banjo to open a set.

While its touring schedule generally doesn’t stray very far from the Northeast, Max Creek will be making a brief run in Colorado this week before returning back home. There are three different opportunities for Colorado kids to catch the band this week, and it is anyone’s guess as to when they may be coming back ’round these parts. Don’t miss a chance to see a legendary live band because you weren’t sure if you were really that into it: Max Creek is money in the bank. Make these guys feel at home in Colorado!
