Since solidifying the new lineup back in March of 2002 (with four new members),
Furley has steadily been evolving into a mature group with diverse musical ideas. The new lineup has combined new guitar/synth player Joe Serrone, tenor sax/flutist Nick Gianni, the soprano, alto, and baritone saxes of Carl Obrig, and new drummer Ian Katz, with the original members bassist Colm Connell and percussionist Vinny Commisso. Having played around 50 gigs since March, including opening slots for Charlie Hunter, Jazz Mandolin Project, and Deep Banana Blackout, among others, Furley has also been active on the festival circuit at ScottyPaluza, Harvest Celebration, and SoulFlow.
In October Furley went into the studio, while still gigging every weekend, to put down some of the intense material they’ve composed over the past nine months. The result has been extremely satisfying. It’s called Dragon and Phoenix. The album has some deep musical adventures. Keeping with the heavy dance groove vibe that you get at their shows, Furley also explores Middle Eastern, Latin, Afro-pop, dub, as well as funk and rock influences. Seven tracks of “sonic bliss,” as one has said in a past review, this band is one that is surely up and coming if not pretty high up there already!
Please join Furley at one of their upcoming shows, with the CD release party at Tobacco Road on Saturday, December 28 being a fitting climax to an extremely productive 2002 for this great band.
