Strangefolk is storming through the nation this month and soon they will be back East. If reviews of the recent shows in Colorado are any indication, those heading to any of the upcoming Strangefolk concerts are in for a treat. Strangers Helping Strangers will be setting up at several shows during the end of Strangefolk’s ongoing Fall Tour in late October and early November.
Strangers Helping Strangers (SHS) is the fan-based charitable organization supporting and supported by the Burlington, Vermont-based jamband Strangefolk. SHS collects non-perishable food at Strangefolk concerts and donates it to charities local to the venues where Strangefolk performs. They offer chances at prizes and incentives to those who bring food donations to scheduled SHS events.
SHS recently held a very successful food drive at Strangefolk’s 7th Annual Garden of Eden Festival over Labor Day Weekend at Haystack Mountain in Wilmington, VT. Nearly 2,000 food items were collected for the Brattleboro Area Drop-In Center. Since 1998, SHS has collected well over 10,000 non-perishable items for charities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. This year has been SHS’s most successful to date, marked by an expansion in coverage area and volunteers.
Today, SHS holds events as far south as Washington, D.C. and as far west as Pittsburgh, PA. In one year, SHS’s volunteer corps expanded from five to twenty-two people. Within the next year, SHS hopes to gain 501(c)(3) non-profit status, as well as expand to other areas Strangefolk frequents on a regular basis, including the Midwest, Colorado and the West Coast. A detailed listing of past results, as well as the charities that SHS has donated to, is available on the SHS website.
In addition to collecting food at these upcoming concerts, SHS will be raffling off a limited edition autographed and framed Strangefolk Halloween poster. Only fifty of these posters were made, and only this poster will be signed by the band. Raffles will be available at the SHS events designated below (*). The winner will be drawn at the 11/3 concert at Higher Ground in Winooski, VT, and the winner does not have to be present to win. You can purchase one ticket for $1, five tickets for $3, and 10 tickets for $5. Proceeds will benefit Strangers Helping Strangers and the events and programming they provide to the jamband community.
“Donations have been down as of late, but we hope that this run of events will be our most successful for the year,” says SHS Director and Event Coordinator Marc Drouin. “The holiday season is quickly approaching, and with the economy as it has been, these benefiting charities will need all the help they can get.”
SHS will be collecting non-perishable food at the following Strangefolk concerts. SHS asks that concertgoers please visit the SHS website before bringing food to any SHS events for the latest details, for the latest SHS and Strangefolk news, and for info on the SHS prize levels. Prizes for these SHS events will include Strangefolk T-shirts, live CDs and various other prizes.
