RANA is not a jamband (though they certainly do know how to stretch out a tune out nicely). No, RANA is a rock ‘n’ roll band like they used to make, you know, back in the day. Four guys playing balls out, dead great songs and a profound passion to rock your ass right off your body. They sing every line like they mean it. They also have a sincere appreciation for ‘80s music that transcends the usual tongue-in-cheek hipness. When they dive into the Talking Heads “Thank You For Sending Me An Angel” or The Waterboys’ “We Will Not Be Lovers” they make you really appreciate the tunes.
When their own material carries a hint of these influences it never feels false or forced. Some of their tunes are funny and catchy like the smart side of Squeeze without the self-conscious wink. Others have a clear eyed sincerity that’s refreshing in an age where cynicism is a virtue. The solid kick of their sound is reminiscent of Eno-era Roxy Music or Cheap Trick if the video age hadn’t ravaged their punk pop sensibilities. Or maybe it’s Steely Dan one hears in spots, but a Steely Dan that likes the fine Colombian better than the Cuervo Gold. In the end it’s all still RANA music and you shouldn’t be surprised if you find yourself hoisting a lighter into the air when you see them perform.
The band is making their way out to the West Coast for the first time and finally California, Utah and Colorado can discover why everyone in NYC and Jersey is screaming out for a “Backstage Pass” (which keyboard player Matt Durant says can be obtained by doing everything the song describes or making offerings to the band including money). For those that haven’t experienced the foot stomping glory of RANA in concert and wonder what to expect, Matt says, “It’s everything they’ve heard about the New York rock scene but we actually back it up. They will leave our show forever changed.” He then laughs a bit at his own words. That’s this band to a tee. They’ll will rock you like a hurricane but smile broadly while doing it.
