WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE NEW ULU?

While there has been a shakeup in the ulu camp this year, the changes have not slowed them down. They have been on tour non-stop for over two years, keeping up a hectic pace of 150-180 shows per annum. Joining ulu on these dates will be bassist Brian Killeen and drummer Josh Dion. Together they hold a steady groove while veterans saxophonist Aaron Gardner and keyboard player Scott Chasolen continue the ulu tradition, combining jazz, funk, and groove sensibilities to produce a fresh, invigorating sound reminiscent of Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, or 70's era Herbie Hancock.

ulu is an instrumental quartet that has fueled audiences with their unique fusion of new school funk and collective improvisation for the past five years. Chasolen and Gardner, commanding a revolving cast of players, have recently begun injecting spoken word and singing into ulu¹s "gumby-textured-squonk," in search of that magic sound. ulu's fanbase has been rapidly increasing due to strong internet presence, national press attention, and high profile touring, with dates opening for such artists as De La Soul, The Jazz Mandolin Project, Greyboy All-Stars, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and moe.
