With the anniversary of September 11 right around the corner, many groups across the country are organizing commemorative gatherings to mourn and remember the events of that fateful day. On Saturday, September 7, Michael Franti, his group Spearhead and the Guerrilla Management Collective bring you a special event, the 4th Annual 911 Power to the Peaceful Festival, in Golden Gate Park with the specific focus of unifying the peace community.

On Sunday, September 8, they will also be holding a Social Justice Forum at New College in San Francisco, CA. Spearhead will be performing a live acoustic set, along with six local organizations holding workshops on social justice issues. The forum will give people an opportunity to put words into action and learn how they can make a difference.

The 4th Annual 911 Festival is an event where activism, music, and art come together to raise the consciousness of the people of San Francisco. The first two 911 Festivals (1999 and 2000) were held on September 11 to draw attention to the emergency state of the court case of Mumia Abu Jamal. Last year's events involving the World Trade Center and the world abroad brought new significance to the subsequent festivals. Michael Franti states that the 4th annual 911 Power to the Peaceful Festival "will create a compassionate space of healing for ALL those people killed or displaced by terrorism and by the war on terrorism." The main stage will feature performances and/or speeches by Michael Franti and Spearhead, Mystic, Los Mocosos, Amy Goodman (award-winning journalist of Democracy Now), Jello Biafra, Medicine Drum, New Soul Singers, Krist Novoselic (formally of Nirvana), and many other activists and spoken word artists. There will also be a DJ tent featuring some of the Bay Area's hottest DJ's.

Michael Franti is well-respected as a lifelong musician, activist, and poet. His incisive lyrics, soulful jams and riveting stage presence earmark Michael Franti & Spearhead as being among the most compelling, thought-provoking and ultimately inspiring artists performing today. Stay Human (Six Degrees Records), Michael Franti & Spearhead's latest album, is an enlightening musical meditation on social justice, legal injustice and the death penalty.
