After hearing wonderful things from several sources, I was fortunate to catch up with Boulder’s Jiveat Quixote’s in Denver. My third visit to the club proved to be the best with a large crowd and the use of both stages. The opener and set tweener Uvosa provided a wonderful way to keep the music flowing the whole night.

I as introduced to the world of Jive by Tyler Bender, their drummer. He told of non-stop touring followed by vehicle troubles which forced the band to miss Jazz Fest, but allowed them to play closer to home for several shows. He felt that their level of music has increased significantly since they have slowed down and caught their breath. His opinion served to be true as they soon led an all out dance session!

The band features Tyler on drums, Dave Henry on guitar, Lance Smith on guitar, Dave Chiorini on bass, Greg Warren on sax and flute and guest keys player Ronneka Cox. Ronneka had never rehearsed with the band and yet seemed to fit in beautifully. The band started right off the bat with funk, funk, funk! The first set featured instrumental covers of “Funkfoot,” a Brand New Heavies tune, and Hendrix’s “Crosstown Traffic.” After an intense first set, the set break was a necessity for everyone to catch their breath. The second set picked up right where they left off and had the crowd shakin! Highlighting the second set was a jazzy version of “2001,” and the bands originals were very tight and danceable. The band could not leave the stage before the crowd demanded an encore. The band obliged and continued to bring down the house.

While the band is currently concentrating on their music and playing local shows, look out for this band to be seeing a lot of this country in the near future. Their instrumental music fits right in line with the funk explosion on the scene and they will find their niche real soon!
