On the evening of Wednesday June 12th, Los Angeles music fanatics will get treated to a triple dose of fun for a good cause with the EarthSave Benefit at 14 Below in Santa Monica. From EarthSave’s web-site it reads: "EarthSave leads a global movement of people from all walks of life who are taking concrete steps to promote healthy and life-sustaining food choices. EarthSave supplies information, support and practical programs to those who have learned that their food choices impact environmental and human health. We support individuals in making food choices that promote health, reduce health care costs, and provide greater independence from the medical system. We raise awareness of the ecological destruction linked to the production of "food animals." We advocate and promote a delicious, planet-friendly diet." The music starts at 7:30pm with local bluegrass favorites, monkeyGrass, followed by local band Thalamus Flynt, and then a headlining set by the festive funkateers known as mamaSutra. Here is what some of the bands had to say recently....

Dan Halter (mandolin) of monkeyGrass on the life of a new band.....

"It’s been a little less than one year since monkeyGrass first got together and began picking weekly at the Venice Bistro. In that time, the four piece, string quartet has gained a respectable following of music lovers, who show up time and time again to hear a unique take on bluegrass. In its brief run, mG has shared the stage with Yonder Mountain String Band twice, passed the Area 51 Soundtest, and played on numerous jamband bills in Southern California. The band is as follows: Paul Aziz on guitars and vocals, Robby Loeb on Banjo and vocals, Dane Halter on mandolin and vocals, and Chip Fieberg on bass and vocals. With two vegetarians and four Earth lovers in the band, EarthSave is a great match. So, when they approached us to play at the benefit, we were honored."

Russel Spirlock (sax and guitar) of mamaSutra on the addition of a new band member.....

"We've always been on the lookout for the right keyboard player for this band. Since day one. So one year ago this week, we play a friend's wedding in a Malibu canyon and they ask if it's cool if this guy Arlan jams with us. Several different people assure us that this guy is the kind of player who can just jump in and bust it out. True. He rolls up with a Hammond B3, a couple of Leslies, Wurlitzer, a Roland synth and more pedals than you can shake your butt at. The night was a big highlight. Over half a year, and many more gigs as a trio later, we finally began rehearsals with Arlan. The make the second annual 420 party GO OFF. The result: 2 of the biggest sets mamaSutra have played... till 6:15 am. The energy that Arlan brings to the stage and to our music boosts it all up to the next level. In addition to all that, several of Arlan's songs, particularly "Jalapeno Rimjob," have quickly become the most requested tunes at our shows. It just gets bigger and bigger. We are psyched to be playing this benefit and expose our new secret weapon to the masses. I think there may be some special guests sitting is as well. Definitely don’t miss out on this show!!

Tickets are available for $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
