Unlimited Sunshine stands out as a brave and brilliant touring unit among a summer season of all-too-predictable festival line-ups. Designed as an antidote to the boredom that ensues from the typical "alternative music festival," Unlimited Sunshine unveils a truly unwonted collection of some of today's most dynamic and stylistically creative bands. The result of John McCrea and Pete McNeal's (CAKE) mission to find their own amusement, Unlimited Sunshine is not for the complacent concert goer. Instead, fans should prepare to be roused by the adventurous nature and unflinching authenticity of each musical act. Unlimited Sunshine is five hours of unhampered entertainment from CAKE, the Flaming Lips, De La Soul, Modest Mouse and KINKY.
CAKE's irresistible and cleverly sparse sound, the Lips' poignant and ethereal melodies, and the freewheeling rhymes of De La Soul are all enchanting phenomena. Modest Mouse's cathartic and volatile rock and the innovative electronic disco swell of Mexico's KINKY serve as further reminders that here the limits of music genre are, in fact, non-existent. To ensure the event is completely unpredictable, The Hackensaw Boys will perform acoustic bluegrass interludes between sets. As McCrea explains, "This music, to varying degrees, exists outside of the very concepts of mainstream and alternative. The criteria are alive and not theoretical, musical and not cultural or economic. We just wanted to find some music that we didn't hate and put it into a show."
Unlimited Sunshine is the freshest festival to come around in quite a few years. Expect this impressive and unconventional celebration of music and freedom to become part of America's summer music tradition.
