A course in Grooveology 101 will be held Friday night, May 3rd at Tribeca Blues in NYC, when members of the nine-piece ensemble The Truth will be joined by two special guests: guitarist Mike Bradley and drummer Marc Balling of Hartford, CT’s funk outfit The Thang.
The Truth has been cooking things up around New York City for the past few months, hitting folks off with their own brand of silky instrumental movements and tight, greasy rhythms, getting the people up to get down. The Thang has the dance floor on lockdown in their hometown of Hartford, CT, recently releasing their debut record Groovejazz Vol. 1, a collection of soul-smooth original numbers featuring the quartet’s strong hold on the formula of cool.
As students at Hartford’s Trinity College, Truth guitarist Matt Dickey and Thang guitarist Mike Bradley steeped themselves deep in instrumentalism, concentrating their focus on the works of many jazz giants, as well as world rhythms and classical orchestration. As it may often be that multiple guitar players may impede on one another in this type of setting, in this case it is not so. Dickey and Bradley work off of each other in exquisite fashion adding tasty ingredients to the mix. These two have joined each other on stage many times, including the Thang’s record release party in Hartford and at a gig at NYC’s the Lion’s Den, where Truth percussionist Rob Krevolin was also added into the mix.
Along with the ultra-dynamic Liqwid, the TruThang is gonna be dropping some soul-jazz stew for the groove nation on May 3rd. Friends of the Thang, who are currently on tour with Dickey Betts’ band Great Southern, will be in town as they are working at BB King’s that evening. So expect some more special guests to get the party jumping! Check you there.
