NYC jazz and groove quartet ulu are on tour now in support of their new album, titled What's The Deal. The album was recorded last spring in Boston, MA and produced by Garret Vandermolen. What¹s the Deal was released nationally by Boston label Catapult Records in late January of 2002. These dates marks the debut of ulu with the brand new rhythm section of bassist Mitch Cohn and Drummer Jason Gardner. Please see a partial listing of dates below.
ulu have been on tour non-stop for over a year now having just returned from a successful run with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and a successful performance at the 2002 SXSW Festival in March. The band is also planning an album of re-mixes for 2002.
ulu is an instrumental, hard-edged quartet that has fueled audiences with their unique fusion of new school funk and collective improvisation for the past four years. Ulu's fanbase has been rapidly increasing due to strong internet presence, national press attention, and high profile touring, allowing them to share the stage with John Scofield, De La Soul, The Jazz Mandolin Project, Greyboy All-Stars, and Oteil Burbidge of the Allman Brothers, among others. ulu also holds the distinction of being the only instrumental band to perform at Woodstock '99.
Ulu's 1998 self released debut album generated great interest and was featured on ABC's "World News This Morning", MTV's "The Real World" and "Road Rules" and TNT's "NBA Basketball Playoffs". ulu's self-titled first cd was recently re-issued on Catapult records.
