Ten Ton Chicken is the name of a band from Berkeley, CA. Perhaps one of the
most outlandish band names in recent times, but once your hear them, it seems
to make a lot more sense. This five-piece unit is definitely heavy and. . . well,
I can’t quite say how the Chicken comes into play, but it sure sounds funky…
And is it ever.
I slipped on their disc at a party last night and watched
from a distance as people began to groove, body parts started to move and
bewildered heads turned to ask, “What is this!?”
In today's age of dime a dozen funk bands, Ten Ton Chicken manages to separate
themselves from the pack. Sure they integrate a lot of elements we’re all
familiar with, but they’re tapped into that “something special.” Coating each
morsel of sound with a distinctly delicious flavor. They have written some
very clever originals that flow so naturally, they’ll be in your head for the
rest of the day, and then some.
Ten Ton Chicken consists of Jamison Reed, pioneering on Sax & Effects, Gary
Morrell’s delectable Guitar, Nick Peck funking it out on the Hammond B3,
Clavinet, & Wurlitzer, Tom Fejes on Bass and Rich Dibenedetto hitting the Drums, and holding
down the juicy bottom. A couple of their songs also have vocals which are
very unique and enjoyable. This band is amazingly tight for only being
together just over a year. Their commitment to having fun and spreading
celebratory vibes has been spilling freely onto Nor. Cal funk-lovers and now
the time has come to share it with us, down in the dancehalls of So. Cal.
