With a heavy emphasis on Derek and the Dominos material, all reports indicate this was one for the history books. While the ABB kept the first set strictly inside the Brotherhood, the second featured guest spots from Clapton as well as Gov't Mule keyboardist Danny Louis and the second appearance this year from Susan Tedeschi.

wow, I saw them a few years ago at the Beacon (ith Taj and Ben Harper guest appearances) and it was sick.

Johnny Winter, Los Lobos, Taj, and Levon, Larry and co. ... looks like they kicked things off with a bang.

Butch said on Moogis that if you have tickets to the 14th "you won the lottery"

it is rumored to be some jazz musicians who they really look up to and who are outside of the box so to speak. Clapton on the 19th and 20th supposedly

pimpmcgeorge,

I agree 100%. Levon Helm is fucking badass. ManyRoads, he played last year to support Dirt Farmer, the most recent album, so I kind of doubt it, but it would be cool. I have never seen Levon Helm play before and would love for him to do a tour soon. I don't know why Trey and Page would be sitting in; where is that even coming from? Clapton, yes; Trey and Page, seriously doubt it.

I saw Johnny live at the Handlebar here in Greenville. We won a contest with the local radio station "Get Schooled By Johnny Winter". We got to go backstage and hangout with him before the show. Man the poor guy is old, and blind, but damnit can he still friggin play man. He blew the roof of the small bar. Can't wait to have him back again!! Loud, dirty, Texas Blues at its best!!

GOTTI3- the connection is both phish and allmans are GREAT live acts, and although they are from different "era's of music", 40 and 20 years after each first started, they are both still kicking ass, and when you think about all the problems/issues, ect. over the years for both acts, it's amazing that Phish IS still together, but I think even far more amazing that Allman's are still kicking ass. I also think if Trey and Page showed up it would be great for everyone at the show, and I'd be jealous. Hey, if Kidrock and Jay-Z can pop up at a phish show, I'm liking the odds of Phish showing up at a Allman's show.

My, oh my...the A-Bros with EC! Considering Derek's year-long run with Clapton while they rehashed all of those D & the Dominoes classics, those two are gonna be dialed in to each other. I would eat a turd and post it on youtube for the chance to be there for those shows.

I think its wrong to get annoyed just because some people get excited by the possibility of an amazing guitarist such as trey sitting it with such an amazing band like the brothers. i definitely agree that there is often too much hype and over-obsession surrounding phish but at the present moment i believe we are just all really curious to see these great musicians on the road again. also, its the simple fact that phish and the brothers play such different styles of music that makes this so intrsting because they can both jam like no others. i think everyone is just excited to see what greatness is possible when we combine these two heavyweights on a single stage. i think they will each bring something great out in each other. LET THE MUSIC PLAY!!!!

first off, congrats to the allmans for 40 years of awesome music! Since some people can't see the importance of trey and page playing with the allmans, i thought i'd list the reasons why trey and page are returning the favor. Butch trucks has sat in with phish in west palm beach in 1995 and on 11/02/1996(which was my first phish show!). Derek Trucks has sat in with phish in charlotte 1999. Oteil has played in several phish related bands, including surrender to the air in 1995/96 and he has played with page in vida blue and the newer PBS which is scheduled to play at jazz fest. Both page and trey have sat in with the allman brothers in 2005, but never at the same time! So there is a long historical relationship between members of phish and the allman brothers band. I'm not trying to steal the thunder from the allmans on their historic beacon run, but to deny the relevance of phish and the allmans is being ignorant. long live the allman brothers...long live phish!

^one more thing....i think trey also sat in with the allmans as far back as 1993 if i'm not mistaken, which i might be?

rizzlesanderson Fri 3/13/2009 05:22AM

p.s... trey has often told stories of growing up listening to the allmans. Trey's dad was a big allman fan and would often play allmans records such as live at the fillmore east in their house when trey was a wee tot. So the allmans were a major influence of trey.

Just stated my opinion that the beacon run should be about the allmans history and not about phish. members of phish hve history which I stated in my posts. Still feel that it is minimal.

First off...for all you criticizers (sp?) - check out this great song by Bob Marley (if you find it relevant, of course)...it's called "Judge Not"

I was at the show last night...why hasn't anyone mentioned Buddy Guy?!!! He blew the roof off the Beacon! I love the Allman's, Phish, and all good music...Buddy Guy stole the show last night. His voice alone practically knocked my down. Southbound Mama with the Allman's, Page, Trey, and Buddy Guy was one of the most stunning musical treats of my concert filled life. Hats off to the whole band, mgmt, production crew, and Beacon for putting together what, to me, was a historic night. Thank you also to (Karen?) who was dancing with me up on the Loge while the whole rest of the section was, can you believe it, sitting down for the whole show!!! We rocked that balcony! Long live the Allman's and great music all around.

I am sending wonderful vibes to all of you here on jambase...keep it positive and keep boogying!

To all the people hating on Phish...get over it. Anyone who doesn't like Phish and sees Trey and Page sitting in with ABB immediately has a stigma. "I don't like Phish, so I don't like Trey and Page playing with the ABB." Here is my advise...LISTEN TO THE MUSICIANSHIP. They are all very talented musicians so to immediately disregard them sounds unintelligent.

I bought the Moogis deal and it has already been worth it. Tons of their old shows are archived on there as well. The quality of the video is very very good. I hope it works well enough for Butch that he continues it. His goal is to hook up a bunch of the better smaller "jamband" venues around the country with permanent video and charge a subscription fee to see all shows at those venues from your cpu/tv. I am way into that.

i think its hard to pick a best guitarist between trey, warren, and derek. right now i'd go with derek, mainly because i like the way he fingerpicks and rips the slide. i used to like warren a lot more, he seems to play like he's playing a gov't mule show no matter what band he's on stage with. if you listen to the allman shows from the 90s his style is a lot different. i still like trey, but to me he doesn't sound nearly as good as he was back before phish took their first break. he still has the occassional awesome moment where he rips it, but just doesn't bust it out like he used to. the recent hampton shows were great, but he sounds awful on some of the songs. during the mid-90s he blew my mind though. some of the phish shows in 1997-98 are still the most incredible live shows i think i've seen. just my opinion though, i'm sure there are people that like trey and warren better than derek.

what?? why all the Phish bashing?

hats off to the guy who went on a tangent about Trey, Page, and the Allmans being impossible, seeing as Trey has played plenty of shows with Warren, Derek, and Gregg Allman solo as well as the band as a whole since like the early 90's.

these shows looked great though, i'm really kickin myself for not bein able to make it.

I saw Dickey in Columbus last night. It was a good show but I couldn't help but think he (and I!) should be at the Beacon. Songs like Blue Sky, Seven Turns, and Back Where It All Begins are missed in the rotation. Too bad the guys can't bury the hatchet. But ABB is still great and this run sounds incredible. The moogis deal would be a go for me if it included downloads of the SBDs. I definitely want CDs of all these shows. If the Sonny Landreth/John Scofield show happens it will be a hell of a night, as are all of these. Phish haters-open your mind and download the Hampton shows.

i have to say i agree with the above statement, and i'm a huge trey fan. Derek Trucks is the heart and SOUL of the allman brothers. I just watched the youtube video of "i know you rider" and derek just destroyed that solo. Warren's solo was typical warren, which was good. Then Trey tore it up, in his typical style. But derek's solo seemed to leap off the stage. It made both trey and warren's solos pale in comparison. The guy just has such an awesome sound for fingerpicking with a slide. Like i said, i'm ahuge trey fan, but derek just schooled both him and warren. Not that it was a competition or anything, but derek stole the show.

saturday night, especially the 2nd set > encore, was the best night of music i've seen in a while. Guilded Splinters was a nice surprise. About 3 songs I didn't know so there was a good change of pace. Dreams was real nice, quite jazzy.

2nd set was where the magic happened. I usually don't like seeing slow sing alongs at a concert like this, but Melissa was placed perfectly to warm up the crowd. then the whole thing just took off. Liz Reed > Drums/Jam > Liz Reed was at least a half hour long and just plain nutzo. Stanley Clarke plays bass like a lead guitarist plays a guitar. He went off for about 5 minutes. All in all, I give this show an 11.

It's amazing that after all these years, the allmans can still rock so friggin hard

Iwantthephunk, they usually release the CDs about a month after the shows on hittinthenote.com. And they usually offer package deals for runs but 15 shows I'm sure will be expensive (probably about $250). I'm sure some torrents will show up if you look in the next few weeks but they'll probably be AUDs, unless somebody records their moogis feed and posts it (there's an idea). There's also youtube clips. I'm hoping (they've GOT to do this) they release a double DVD of sit-in highlights and it features 3/26/09 w/Dickey Betts (had to go there).

But,a band like this should at least release low bitrate recordings so folks who love the music and can't get in can share the experience. I was at the March 17 show. Amazing! First time at the Beacon and the Brothers didn't disappoint! They are having a great time, no doubt, and for the most part, sound better than they have in many years. FYI, while Tommy Talton and Scott Boyer are members of Capricorn Rhythm Section, that band rarely performs these days. Tommy and Scott are best known for the group they co-founded in the 70s, Cowboy. Cowboy was on the Capricorn label, and toured with Gregg on the Gregg Allman Tour (and the ensuing live album). Cowboy is awesome! It's hard to find any music by these guys as everything is out of print. Go to www.myspace.com/officialcowboy for a few tunes. Also, Tommy Talton has a killer new band, one studio CD on Hittin' the Note Records, and a new live CD due out March 27. Check him out at www.myspace.com/tommytaltonband . Great stuff!

It's great to see the Beacon Tradition continue. Also having Warren (The Beast, The Lion, The King of the Jungle rip with Derek (God) Is just completely ridiculous to the point wear they literally peel the paint off the walls, reduce the stage to cinders after a firey inferno nad everyone in the audience lose their skulls. Peace, sLiDe Love to Mr. Herring with them!!

i was there both clapton nights, altho the setlist looks the same, its very differnt musically, the first night was awesome, first set was smoking, then clapton comes out and rippes it also did "anyday" which they didnt do the second night, show was over by 1130. second night they did Stormy Monday AND Elizabeth Reed which were super long and SICK, show was over by 1am. so second night clapton played for like an hour longer and even the repeats had all differnt solos. both were great, second night better

I agree, this run of shows will be history, 20 years from now people will still be talking about how many GREAT musicians played. Trucks is one of the best guitarists right now and would have done anything to be there the night Clapton, Haynes, Guy and Trucks got together. heard trucks blew the roof off.

I've watched all of the shows so far on moogis.com and last night was by far the best. First of all, the first set had the king curtis kingpins and ron holloway.... if you don't know them, look em up. Then the second set opened with a "little martha"--> BLUE SKY JAM!!!!!--->little martha!!! That shit was enough to make my year right there, but then it just kept getting better and better. JB and Herring together for three songs, including one of my favs, "can't find my way home"... which was great... but the best was the Les Bres with just Jimmy as the guest. His relationship is so good with Oteil, Derek, Warren and all the brothers, and that was one of the best 17 minutes of my life... easy. Way better than both nights of clapton combined!!! Anyway, Clapton wasn't that great with the brothers.... he was out of his element. Why do you think he played all the same songs two nights in a row??? Because he sucked on them the first night and was too washed up to learn a new song!!

Clapton = no longer god

Jimmy Herring = his replacement

Great comments, burntownballer. So I decided to watch the World Baseball Classic final last night instead of the Brothers live on moogis. Looks like I missed the excitement live, but the great thing is I'll watch it all tomorrow night! It looks like one of cooler set lists so far, and great special guests - Mike Mattison kicks tail.

I somewhat agree about Clapton. He took all the first solos on night one, and it just wasn't hittin'. I also think that's why they played pretty much the same songs on night two. At least he took the last solos in most songs on night two, so he got a much better feel for what the Brothers were doing and it sounded a whole lot better. Looking forward to the 3-26-09 show - Dickey or no, it should still be badass. 40 years to the day!

listen to all u fools argue about who's better than who. the great thing about music is diff. groups touch people in diff. ways. its all about creating magic and stirring the soul. lets not forget wat this beacon run is all about. ABB has rocked peoples asses off for 40yrs and showing no signs of slowing down. enough said! to see them jam with all these great musicians is a momentus occasion no matter who is on stage with them! old skydog himself is lookin down and smiling guarenteed! the road goes on forever! by the way...dickey is a drunken fool who got kicked out for a reason so stop talkin about him! the current ABB lineup is as good as it possibly could get from the original 6. even gregg agrees. ya'll need to put ur petty differences aside and enjoy this ride, cause its only gonna happen once!

burntown i respectfully TOTALLY disagree, ive been to every night but 2, in the first 6 rows, last friday night with clapton, if you call that "out of his element" you have no idea what your talking about , that was some of the best music i v ever heard, and im sorry but it was way better then the JB herring night, not saying it wasnt good, but PLEASE, i mean liz reed? stormy monday? on firday was EPIC, they both clocked in at 25min+ and blew the top right off the beacon, not to mention clapton played till 1am. herring was good, but NOT clapton, i mean just listen to the tapes AGAIN. and it also WASNT better then the TREY BUDDY GUY AND PAGE night, both those nights were better then the widespread night, again, monday was awesome, but it wasnt even CLOSE to last firday with clapton. this is from the 6th row

I kinda agree with Jim, but Phish and ABB/ Dead are in different categories in my opinion, same genus, different species. And how long is the ABB run? You'd have to compare it to Phish or the Dead's entire tour. Compare this run to Hampton, or in the future, Red Rocks? It can't be done out of the sheer lack of dates. This run compared to Phish's or the Dead's Summer 09 tours? That's different. I would've like to see ABB tour. A redonk Beacon run is awesome, but traveling around is so tasty. For that reason I will do all of the east coast Phish dates... except for Fabulous Fox because I don't have 2 grand for a balcony seat. ROCK.

I don't understand the hate towards Kid Rock. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm no Kid Rock fan and I never have been, but I also don't think he so terrible that if he sits in and adds some vocals it's going to ruin a show. Of all the more mainstream artists in the US today, he more so than probably any, has clearly been hugely influenced by southern rock and is sitting in with the Allman Brothers Band as a respectful homage to their great career. I fail to see why this is so shameful.

^^^ im not gonna compare phish and abb at all cause theres no reason to. but how can you laugh about people comparing them and phish, they come from the same basic genre and fan base and are both widely respected. one thing is while phish hasnt been playing for as long, they`ve been playing with the same line up. when i look abb today i think warren/dereck. point is i dont think the band would be what it is right now without those two, and they arent original members..thats like saying the dead have been doin it so many years when you have warren instead of jerry...bottom line, the two arent comparable.

The Allman Brothers Band is the greatest band in the history of rock & roll, and this historic run of shows, after 40 years on the road, pretty much proves it in my book. That being said, there is one thing that kind of bothers me, re: Dickey Betts. While I understand that there may still be too much bad blood to bring him back, (or maybe Dickey doesn't want to return, who knows?) I am a bit surprised that they continue to play his songs.(Liz Reed, Jessica, Les Brers) Maybe I'm too critical, but I think that ABB has a deep enough catalog on their own. Could they get away with Ramblin' Man or Blue Sky with Warren on vocals? I dunno. Before I get thumbs down for this comment, let me repeat: ABB is the BEST EVER, but they could be just a bit better with the guy who carried the band through the 70's and wrote all their biggest hits.

Honkeytron,

I agree. I miss Dickey. The trouble is that I bet the remaining members of the Allmans miss Dickey as well. It is a tragedy that Dickey's behavior while drinking got so bad. I don't think that it is just hurt feelings keeping Dickey off of that stage.

I just wrote 4 consecutive sentences with the word "Dickey" in each.

the current ABB has played blue sky without dickey a few times, (5/21/05 was the best!)...they don't play ramblin man thou, and thats fine with me. Even thou liz reed, jessica and les b might have been thought up by dicky - all those songs have spots for the other band memebers to shine and that is why they play them. Rambin man is by dickey for dickey...that is why they don't play that song. Too selfish a song for this band.

I have made the trip to NYC for the brothers twice...just wish one of them was this year...too bad I missed the heat.

What a great run of shows. I realy wish I could have been to one of them. Regarding Dickey, I once thought (after he was booted out) that I would never like the ABB quite as much again. (Of course I was not too familar with Warren back then) Boy was I wrong. The current lineup is one of the best ever. Unfortunately Dickey is a far cry from what he was. It would be nice for him and the band to reconcile but it wouldn't improve the quality of the music IMO.

i'm not going to jump into the dickey argument again, i like the band now and when he was with them. i do think the comment donley26 has made about them not playing ramblin man because it is a selfish dickey song it pretty ridiculous though, and he didn't just "think up" liz reed, jessica, and les brers. those are some of the most complicated instrumentals ever written. don't forget their wouldn't be an allman brothers band today without dickey. on a side note, the kid rock bashing is cracking me up. i didn't hear a single negative comment when he came out with phish in vegas. i think it would be awesome to see him belt some tunes out up there.

That's cool that Bobby and Phil took the time out of their schedule from the View and played with ABB, I wish they would've stayed on for "Mountain Jam," and jam like they did when they played the Epic Watkins Glen together. As for Kid Rock, if any of you know, he and Haynes are good buddies and have worked together before and also the past few years he's been claiming to be a huge Country/Country Rock fan. He's not a bad musician when he's singing other peoples songs and backed by a band like ABB! But I understand the hate...

Panic Brothers Band on tour Aug-Oct 09:

The 2 best rock bands playing today, and tix are about half what you'd pay to see either one of those noodle-fest snooze-a-thon reunion tours everyone seems so psyched about.
