Editor’s Note: This is the third installment of our new “First Album” column. As the name suggests, it’s an opportunity for some of our favorite artists to tell you in their own words about the first album they ever dropped the needle on. Each week we’ll offer up another musician’s “First Album” experience.

First Album: Matt Maust / Cold War Kids

Out of Time by R.E.M., I got it when it first came out which was probably like sixth grade. It was the first album that I was really like, “Wow, I have no idea what kind of style this is!” KRS-One was on the first track with Michael Stipe, the girl from the B-52’s is on there, they got country music on there, they had everything on there. They had a lot of mandolin and I’m like, “This is country!” A lot of my friends were like, “This is stupid, this is like college rock or something,” but it’s like no, it’s kind of punk at times. I remember that album was the first kind of crunch genre album I got. Like they are doing a whole different thing here and these photographers who were brothers did their artwork.

The Cold War Kids released Loyalty To Loyalty last year, our review is available here. Cold War Kids on tour now, dates here.
