Ryan Adams Quitting Music

Ryan Adams Quitting Music
Blog Indicates Adams Is Happier Than Ever and Will Stop Playing Music For Now

Ryan Adams
Earlier today (01/14) Ryan Adams posted a long statement on his blog indicating that following the final scheduled show with The Cardinals on March 20 in Atlanta, he will be quitting music, at least for the time being. What follows is taken directly from Adams' blog http://cave.cardinology.com:

me- 34-a non smoker and happy, for the first time in my life.. i am excited to finish this wonderful time i have had with the cardinals and whatever new adventures may come after march. atlanta will be my last venture with the band and i am grateful for the time we have had and maybe someday we will have more stories to tell together. i am however ready for quieter times as i think it is very evident i am struggling with some balance and hearing issues.

also, no drama or anything but i am okay to step back from all of this right now and i think i did enough manic blogging when i felt alone and isolated during the last few years of travel. these last few years were the hardest i can remember and the most rewarding but i have loved ones to care for now and i am lucky i have been given a chance to turn around and see just what i am capable of as a friend and as someone who is not gone forever every year- it rendered me incapable of things i needed to be to myself and others- and my schedule sometimes never ended when the shows did- and some of that was my doing. and i lost someone i loved, and i lost myself.

that changed. i got to know just who i am in this little spell of time here recently. and change is the nature of the world and i naturally embrace that.

i won't be blogging here anymore either- but not for effect- it just is not being kind to myself- i need a life that is mine- i need to grow up and grow in to who i have subtly been working back towards since i stopped all that nonsense and i know also no matter what i choose to do in the music world, because i chose to do things my way and never lie i will always be viewed as an "asshole" (i hear and have seen things in the past) and i am not, and i know the truth and i know who i am.

also it is kind of ridiculous to blog as i am a musician and anything i say here just gets reprinted at some point out of context. i say NOT FAIR but it doesn't matter what i say anymore or what is fair anymore really does it- the 21st century media has it's own rules about what is true and what is not. it is not a life- not one i want to live anyway and i don't really care to participate in narcissistic over-indulgent behavior anymore- that was never my intention- i just wanted to fight for my right to make music and to be given the benefit of the doubt. now, because i have stood up for myself and fought for myself i am labeled all kinds of awful things. well, i will walk away now and it will not matter what anyone say's. there are other things i can do in this life, other ways to be creative and to try and help others and be expressive without being demonized for attempting to gain the same things any other human being desires- love- friendship- understanding- and being able to express yourself without constant fear of being mistreated for speaking up

i have friends to make, brand new books coming (two of em' not counting that one already printed and on it's way out there and i LOVE writing...yay!) and a whole lot of living and learning to do.

i am excited to step away. i lost more than anyone will ever know (hearing, someone i loved, my sense of dignity, a never ending losing battle with stage fright and now my hearing and balance due to an inner ear issue- people accusing me of not being sober when i am suffering tremendous pain and nausea from my inner ear symptoms- people accusing me of theft (THEFT- ...awful) and this is not much of a life, not glamorous like those ridiculous video's a long time ago television played and no it is not monetarily as rewarding as people would like you to believe and yes, it is soul destroying. especially when you spend your life trying to write about the really difficult stuff and you stand there losing your way and people yell at you like you were in a circus. when it was your dream to matter and you realize one day, it never mattered- i mean, i am a punch-line and a footnote in what is worse to yell at someone besides "free-bird". i mean, i lost. and it's okay because i seriously snuck some pretty neat idea's in there in the work when i was making those mistakes or they were being made by others. this business is no science.

and you know, whatever this is- it's not my dream. and it is a punishing thing to endure when you are getting worse and worse- it's not my dream, my dream was to try and tap into that energy i saw watching Minutemen vcr tapes when i was just a little shit in NC of mike watt's crazy shaking leg and his electric fingers- or how sonic youth droned into beautiful clouds those guitars shaking, kim and steve rattling the pulsing lines into feverish thudding imaginary subway cars racing through my heart- and how it felt to just let go and static up a riff and find the sweet spot- but getting yelled at for just being a songwriter- to be called so many horrid things because i chose to love music so much, and also to look for peace and balance in my life- that is not kindness and just not my thing. at least not now.

and i loved somebody. and i let others decided if that was okay and that was wrong and i was wrong and no one should deny themselves or others love or understanding because people don't get it. that was an awful mistake. i always make big mistakes. it's like i let myself learn that because that was a role, a niche' i filled that make sense to a loud voice of strangers who would never really play a real part in my life.

never become that if you choose this path- if you go this route with your art. never listen to those loud dissatisfied bystanders who only want to see you fail because that will be entertaining for that moment. hold fast to your dreams, hold faster to your heart and never step out of the light of that love that made you whole. i did. and i know better now. and better late than never i suppose.

but i am okay now. i see a peaceful way to better days now. i am healing. and most importantly i feel loved and i have learned to treat myself with that same curiosity and lover that i have been lucky enough to feel and to learn to let guide my life. love is the great teacher and i am happy to be learning now. happy to be listening to that over this never ending painful ringing. this is the great lesson of my life. for once i want to be dignified in my study and in one place long enough to hear and understand without my pride or my lack of faith in myself leading me further away from things i need to know once and for all.

this is the real work now. the rest is something else entirely.

quitting smoking was a good step and i am happy i also am just now beginning to understand how important it is i take better care of myself in every way right now. hell i am even beginning to sleep a little and i can feel the things good and bad that i did not have time to feel when i was running towards a new oblivion of work, hoping somehow someday what i did would be accepted and maybe that would make me feel loved. how foolish.

that is not love. love is being accepted for who you are. love is taking care of yourself and caring for others and dreaming out loud when it matters. not chasing rainbows. not hoping for some eventual collective sigh of approval which will never come. how did i ever think in those terms? i always knew better. thank goodness i know now how to be honest with myself.

anyway, enjoy these shows (i will enjoy them immensely and i will miss them just as much) and know that i am not abandoning anyone, not the cardinals and not the fans, this is just something i need to do now, and that i loved playing music in the cardinals and hell, even before i was in a place to try and learn to be well, music was my life source- and cardinals was such a heavy crush and a real dream...i honor it too much to have any regrets right now, i am just proud.

maybe we will play again sometime and maybe i will work my way back into some kind of music situation but this is the time for me to step back now, to reel it in and i wish everyone peace and happiness and if music is your dream, or if just dreaming is your dream, may you find your way through the rough patch with ease and i hope you let go and it takes you all the way there-

loving kindness to all.

Ugh, this is the most awful music news I've received in years! I believe that Ryan is one of the most prolific songwriters of our generation. A lot of people disagree and that's ok. The guy's been through a lot of shit in his day and it's good he's starting to grow up.

Recreational Chemist

I didnt read a single lick of what he wrote, but on the cover of relix a few months back he did say he was done making stupid records. I do like some of the stuff he has done, and I like how it says he's quitting, no hiatus, no break, he quits

Sounds like he recognizes the need to get his head on straight. (maturity perhaps?) I would expect to see him back in the future stronger than ever. Best wishes to Ryan!

I hope he doesn't bail before this tour and still comes to boring-ass Columbia, SC on March 12, which of course isn't even listed here b/c we're like the armpit of SC where music goes to die!!!

Ok, so I'm a little bitter about my lame town, but dammit - we're finally gettin' somthin' good, so please do this tour before you bail!

Maybe I don't get it, but he talks about wanting to be accepted and his music to make a difference and he says he failed. Wasn't his most recent record reviewed with great critical acclaim? And I saw it on a lot of Best of '08 lists. And most everything I read about his catalog and songwriting capabilities is nothing but positive and some even write about his songwriting genius. I'm sure he's read some things that I haven't and I've definitely seen people on this site give him a hard time, but I've seen a whole lot of good press on him through the years too. As a long time musician, I learned long ago that not everybody will like your Art. This just comes with the territory of being an artist. It sounds like he is looking for some sort of universal acceptance that I don't think anybody gets. His whole health issue is a valid and separate issue for stepping away, but the "poor me" noone likes my music is hard to buy.

Ya know, this is so tragically great. I cannot help but get that feeling when a grandparent passes away or something. I'm so devastated that I may not get to hear another musical creation of Ryan's again and I have yet to see him perform, but at the same time, this farewell of his packs in so much positivity toward the future and he sounds like he's content with every beautiful and gross uncertainty in life and he's up for the challenge of living 100%. And what can be better than living 100%? How can I complain about that? I'll check out his books, support him spiritually and probably financially with the books, and I wish him the absolute best. A stranger has never done as much for me as he has. "Inspiration" does not even come close to covering it.

Cola21 - I totally agree! Here's the thing though, Ryan goes through these ins and outs all the time. He's happy, he's sad (I think he's most often sad), he's inspired, he's bored, he's energy, he's lazy...he wears his emotions on his sleeve. I think he's just a guy who has so much creativity to share that he gets bored and distracted really easily. It seems like he tries to fight his musical talent, and he'll go off and do other stuff, but he always ends up writing music again. And he loves it! When he's on stage - after breaking the initial comfort on stage thing, he loves it and loves the audience! Now, his hearing issue is certainly something of concern, but I have no doubt that he needs to perform music just as much as we need to see him perform it, so he'll be back.

I'll still be expecting new music from you Ryan in six to nine months. .....

I've read about your hearing issues, and I do hope you are able to get yourself well. As someone who has been a fan and supporter of your music since day one of the Whiskeytown days - I am talking about "Rural Free Delivery" - and some one who has seen you perform with that band and several other incarnations of whatever band you happened to be running with at the time, I know that music, and songwriting, is in your blood. I know we'll here new music from you soon. But take your time. Get well my friend. We'll all still be here, and we would like you to be.

I have the album 'gold' and it is a good album... i have always liked his music... but in minneapolis this guy has a horrible reputation for cancelling shows or not going on or going on really late... He cancelled two shows and didnt refund the money, or something like that... in the twin cities he has one of the worst reputations around, even worse than Prince... so I could honestly care less, he wrote good music/songs, enjoy them for what they are and move on to more fan-friendly artists.

Wow, I definitely expected a lot more flaming going on in these comments.

I was able to catch Ryan's Halloween show in 2007 and it looks like that may be my first and last time ever seeing him live. It's a bummer, yes, but I think he'll be back in some incarnation or another.

This is really a total bummer. I really wish he would not have done that Oasis tour and gone out with just the Cardinals. Now I won't get to see him in LA for god only knows how long. Ryan Adams is a national treasure and we shouldn't have been subjected to British nobodies when all we really wanted to see was Mr. Adams. Ryan go watch the Wrestler, I think Randy "The Ram" could inspire you to give America one last go round, then go ahead and hang it up.

wow...if you can, catch the Cardinals on this tour. I was a skeptic, and then I saw a Boston show this past September on a gorgeous night by the harbor, and I was simply blown away. Maybe I was overly emotional or something (I know i was tired and hung over from a long My Morning Jacket show at the very same venue the night before), but i was simply stunned. The band was great, jamming, the music emotional, and Adams was funny as hell. In a fantastic mood it seemed. I hope that is his mood now, upon announcing this. Happy days...

If you've read his blog you know he's "quit" a lot and always comes back. A break will do him good. Unfortunately, I think his best work is behind him. The Cardinals were a really tight band, IMO too tight for him. I like the dirty/loose material he is capable of, See: Elizabethtown sessions

I just hope he's quitting to o into some type of long term substance abuse facility, which is what he needs.....I'm not a bi fan of his music, but would still like to see him get the help he needs and maybe his music will inprove.

Some people can take drugs or be raging addicts their whole lives and the can keep it together (especially millionaires), while others just can barely get through a day without a dramatic episode of some type.....The latter need to get some help, and stay far far away from substances afterwards.

I do agree he's very talented, but he recently opened for Oasis in Chicago, and I'm generally not a hater at all, but he was awful. I was not aware of his health issues, which now I totally understand could've been a reason he wasn't on that night. But what a slow, downer opener for rocking Oasis. I wish him well, but am not sad at all.

I suspect that Ilikephish thinks Trey is not a douche.

Knock him for being crazy, knock him for being a drama queen, but the dude has made some of the best music of our time. If you don't believe me, let time be the judge... in the end, Ryan's best stuff will be remembered right up there with that of Townes Van Zandt, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Graham Parsons, etc. It's a shame he gets so worked up over the critics when he's had the endorsements of some of his idols (Phil Lesh, Willie Nelson, Emmy Lou Harris, Elton John, etc) for years. This is a sad day for me, but I wish Ryan the best and hope that he's able to turn things around.

For those who are unaware - David Ryan Adams is up there with Dylan, Lennon, Garcia and any other timeless, unforgettable songwriters. He has one of the greatest voices in music ever and is possibly the hardest working man in show business.

He wears his heart on his sleeve & gets ridiclued constantly for it.

This is probably just going to be a break but is coming across as something else. We love you Ryan...& those Cardinals. peace.

Ryan was not always great or even good live so I understand how some from our live music community would feel justified in insulting him. However, this man has written some of the best songs of all time and his studio songs are amazing. Please show respect for someone in the top 1% of musicians we should admire. Save insults for pop musicians that have no talent. Cheers!

Damn shame... but judging from the comments of seasoned RA fans, he should be back writing music. I'm thankful I got to see him once on the fall 2008 tour. Wasn't the greatest show, but it still had its moments. Listen to the all acoustic show http://www.archive.org/details/radams2007-06-29.sbd.flac and tell me you are not impressed. There is also an interview on archive he apparently did on 1-13-2009

Whatever this guy needs to be content we should all grant him unconditionally...there a few artists in any creative genre that can make you laugh, cry, soar and ponder all within 5 minutes. Words can not express the gratitude I feel for having discovered him some years ago. To say he wore his heart on his sleeve is insulting to him..he stood naked before us, fearless in showing his humanity and his fragility, his pleasures and his pains, ultimately, his genius

maybe he can just tour solo acoustic and perhaps this will

eliminate some of the dramas that plague him each and every day.

keep it simple stupid!

I've enjoyed his music greatly. He may bail on a show cause he's having a rough time dealing with issues, so what. Sounds like he's trying to get his shit right. We'll see how all you mollie dope heads deal with your heads once you grow up. Obviously Ryan wasn't one to see live but I think his studio stuff is great. I wish him well.

wait - to the dude that keeps talking about his addiction - he's been clean for like a year, and he keeps talking about "being clean."

do you have information we don't know about?

The Cardinals are a SICK band. I get why people get on Adams, and I agree, the drama queen stuff can be a little much, but i boggles the mind that people can't see he's one of this generation's great songwriters. Whatever. Funny how people are such haters. I fucking hate certain bands but i'd never call it out on a site. Talk about a subjective thing.

what the F? what's wrong with some of you people? how can you possibly pretend to hate someone so much that you know practically nothing about? princeOFdankness, you are just a total fucking asshole... seriously, you can't possibly be that much a prick, can you? also, respect to Ryan for being open, honest, and forward with everyone (even knowing that he would probably take some heat from people)

So, I'm not really a fan, but is this guy like the Terrell Owens of music? Honestly, all I know about him is he is known for his talent, but known even more for being a total pain in the ass and crybaby.(based off what I'v read over the past few years). Anyhow, let him take his ball and go home.

Tis is the saddest thing. Ryan Adams is one of the greatest artist in modern music. I am just getting into his music and now this. Thankfully I purchased tickets to his last show in New Jersey.

Prince of Dankness, you are a douche bag of epic proportions!

Ryan, I hope you heal and figure some stuff out, you'll grow a lot in the next few years! Thank you for all you've given of yourself!

fuck you dankness, i restrained myself from responding to your mindless high school antics but after your last comment i have to. i doubt youve ever READ anything by dr. thompson, only seen fear and loathing. that so called quote is taken way out of context, if youre going to reitterate any of sir hunter thompsons brilliance through any sort of quote do it right. people like you are incapble heads who have neither the intelligence or soul to grasp anything like ryan adams, let alone hunter s. thompson.

He is one of the finest troubadors of our time, this is heartbreaking to hear about his ear probs. I have a borderline case of tinnitus coming on myself from seeing so many shows over the years. The Cardinals have been on fire the past few years, catch him if you can folks.

Cold Roses is my leading contender for album of the decade, and I have loved hearing his tunes in Phil's repertoire, and thank you Phil for hipping me to Ryan... feel blessed to be getting this San Antonio show...

First of bud im wondering what bands you like because im most cases if you like someone remotely popular their songs have been in movies to and most likely some dumb ones. second my name stands for my initials smart guy and i dont like in Pittsburgh. third what the hell does your name stand for, marijuana....thats real cool i wish i had thought of that. Finally i would like to here some of your artistically created music that must be much better than his. im not his biggest fan but at least people like his stuff for whatever reasons. maybe you should think before you speak, but i guess by the assumption that your name has something to do with your personality im sure you dont do the most sound thinking in general.

JRP -- hmmm where to start ---- think think think....hey let's try the beginning - who here has smoked weed - well not that it's a contest b/c I don't partake but your busting my balls and you can't even write inteligently - your first mistake if I might point out is "first of bud" well I'm pretty sure you meant 'first off bud' see the second 'f' really makes that word - second "im" now I hate to be a stickler but the 'i' should be captialized plus an apostrophe should be used (not to mention the several times you didn't capitalize I,sorry to nitpick but you started) - and also in the first sentence I'm sure you meant "in" not 'im'. I'm not sure in the second sentence what 'like in pittsburgh' really is supposed to mean. Either you think that I think your jesus and you run Pittsburgh....not likely I think your a piece of shit not jesus! - Well my last point is who gives themselves a nick name? cetainly not me - I was donned the PRINCE OF DANKNESS and it has more to do with my personality being cool and sweet just like the great herb given to us by JAH. And if you think I give a crap about what you think of me you have a lot of growing up to do....have a good night and let's hear it for the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES!!!!!

princeofbeasters I hope you are African American if your freely using the term jah. i hope your not one of those jah loving white boys its kind of embarrassing to many nonwhite individuals. if your not than my bad, but using the term JAH if your not Rastafarian is pretty interesting.

by the way resorting to criticism on my typing ability is very original.

Right on PHISHMAN - I rename you bithcassmothafucka

And to you JRP - I am a minority (Caucasian American) -- I used the term to refer to any religions use of the ideology of GOD - like budha or God or yaweh or whoever it is you worship....and I critisized your use of typing to show you how stupid you are...which is pretty evident. Therefore taking any credibility out of your post but apparently some of the other readers on here are just as foolish as you.

He has written a few good songs but really needs to iron himself out. He Did say that he is quitting music...We will hold you to that Forever bRyan Adams. SPOILER ALERT! When he and his band were rehearsing at our studios in Nashville, they all stopped rehearsing to watch..Friends!!! They are ALL gay. Not that gay is bad...but these sissies are. And PrinceofFartness--it's AWFULly ironic that you criticize other people's abilities while YOU misspell the word 'intelligently'!! You jackasses are Everywhere, UNFORTUNATELY! People need to understand, you can have all the money in the world, all the toys, all the respect, you can even be ryan adams. But thats not going to make you happy! Thats what he's trying to say. he is finally starting to become a little happy and people (like 50% of people commenting on here)judge him horribly on the things he says. Just because someone has a hard time "thinking before he speaks" doesnt mean you should categorize him. unless you personaly know him as a friend, shutup! I would feel like a circus act also just listen to his music and let him live his life already

If people dont like ryan why are you reading his blog? go insult some rapper or "new" country musician. You are the reason great musicians hate doing what they do. Thats cool if you dont like his music, but you know damn well he is good at what he does, hes just a little dramatic so what?

This is sad news for all of us fans, but you can never fully understand or appreciate another's unique conundrum. I think Ryan is one of those "mad ones" that Kerouac talked about, constantly on fire for our benefit. Ryan Adams is an immensely talented artist, and if he never plays another note, we should still thank him for some truly wonderful musical gifts. Good luck to the great Ryan Adams in all future endeavors, and thank you my friend.

An exceptional talent as a songwriter as well as a great musician. Potentially one of the best of our generation. Too bad he's acted like a complete A-hole every other time he's been to Minneapolis. Attacks on Paul Westerberg and Minneapolis residents durring a falling-down-drunk set at First Ave didn't sit well with his fans. A later show at another venue was magical. His return a few month later, not so much (cut short, 20 minutes and dununzio). I understand the brooding artist aspect of things but c'mon. Love the music, hate the attitude. A controlled output such as published writings or studio releases might be the right way to let the talent shine without the hate bleeding through. Please don't come back to Minne and act like that again Ryan. Good luck.
