I'm not usually one that leaves a negative comment, but these guys should be ashamed of themselves, and if this is what it takes to do a tour, then they need to retire. I can't believe the people that are defending the ticket prices. Even if you have the money to spend, and if you have loved the Dead your whole life (which most of us have) that doesn't mean that it is right for them to do this.

as a band whos been basically broke most of their careers due to very little album sales and having to pony up 100k/month just to maintain roadcrew/equipment for the 30 yrs they were on the road, i feel its time for them to make a lil money now. nobody has complained about the dead having a gigantic merchandising uprise since garcia passed. noones complained about how u can buy golf club covers and diving suits with dead logos. i say im willing to pay an arm and a leg for what was the greatest touring act of all time.

Has anyone considered that they purposely set the prices high to discourage fans from going city to city/tour rats? Knowing that has such a negative impact on a tour, myabe this is an attempt to curb it? I don't know, just a thought. I can say that I was going to Buffalo until I saw those prices and now I'll be home that night instead (and $200+ richer)...

SC06033 Mon 1/12/2009 10:14AM
+11 Votes Thumbs down! Thumbs up!

As one who saw many GD shows between '80 and '95, I was actually quite excited to see a show or two on this tour. My balloon has been deflated by these prices, especially considering the economic times we're in. I will instead be home listening to a smokin' show from '73, and save the money to put towards vacation with my family.

As for those calling them "has-beens", give me a break. They are certainly some of the finest musicians on the planet, the absurd ticket prices don't change that fact. It just means that I and other long-time hard-core heads like me will forego seeing them. Priorities change as you get older, and spending hundreds of dollars seeing shows is no longer one of them.

Very disappointing as I was really looking forward to seeing a show or two.

Peace~

this is pure fucked. I didn't believe that the tickets would be $100... i thought you guys were talking scalper prices on ticketsnow.com or something like that.... cuz i couldn't find a ticketprice on Livenation.com or anything.... so i thought this was all speculation of these $100 tix.... ...then I see http://gdtstoo.com/GDTSTOOTheDeadSpring09.html .... holy fuck it's true...

i was looking forward to taking my wife and son on their first tour... now I'm not really looking forward to it.. we're not going to be able to get into every show but we'll be there at a few.

I figured out why they keep going with Warren Haynes and Jeff Chimenti... MONEY!!! Warren can play a great guitar but he can ALSO SING... they don't need to get Steve Kimock on lead plus Joan Osbourne to sing when they can pay Warren less to do both... and by the way, you think they're gonna pay Bruce Hornsby to play with them when they can get the dude from Les Claypool's Frog Brigade to play keyboards for probably pennies?!?! There's NO FUCKING WAY JEFF CHIMENTI IS PAID THE SAME AS WARREN HAYNES FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEAD. I love Jeff but this tour is shaping up to be a fucking disaster.... Since tickets are being charged out the ass, I think there will be a shitload of "extra's" floating around this spring... i feel that there's a reason for this hike in the price... like if there's 5000 extra seats leftover by the time first set it halfway done, i bet someone walks out on lot and starts handing them out. but it will work out... but jesus mary fuckin dick christ... i just can't believe they want $100 for every goddamn show... this is a sad day for me.

$100.00+Ticketbastard charges and what $60.00 for lawn + charges??? Come on. Last time they toured BGP ended giving away lawn seats for $20.00 for Shoreline and Sleeptrain because they were not selling any tickets at those prices. Hopefully Live Nation will do the same after they realize that no one will pay. This long time head will be in the lot scoring tickets on the cheap or won't go at all. Full on BS!

BREAKING NEWS: band changes name to THE GREEDFUL DEAD! after seeing a couple hundred shows with Jerry and NEVER paying more than $30... you can have my tickets for this "the rip off tour"... do the math.... $100 x 20,000 = 2 million a night! for what 3 hours of music? I doubt they are all of the sudden paying the hard working roadies $500,000 a night.... only one word folks....BOYCOTT!... you can go see overpayed athletes for less than these tickets!.... oh did you know parking will prolly be $40+ a car!.... beer $12 for a 12 oz warm flat coors lite.... on and on... no vending, lotsa police, no camping,.... poor newbies have to pay this much to get just a taste of what once was.... BOYCOTT!... give the money to charity or buy yourself something that lasts longer than a 3 hour show... I can't believe I supported this band for so many years and they turn around and do this to the fans.... people I personally know DIED at grateful dead concerts... wow wish i had a time machine then and seen the greed and maybe stopped them from going to the greedful dead ... this truely is a sad day in all our lives to know our musical idols are just using us now, while in an economic recession to boot!.... shame on you "the dead"... shame shame shame! when i was 15 i wanted to see the grateful dead. my first favorite band. knew all the music. my parents wouldnt let me go. tickets were sold out. so i bought 1 ticket for 200 dollars from an agency (face was 30.00) and i ran away from home. that night the Gratful dead played the first Unbroken Chain, the meanest So Many Roads and the sweetest Stella Blue, it was true Grateful Dead magic. i was 3rd row jerry's side. i know i got ripped off on that ticket at the time, and when i got home it was WW3, but i wouldnt trade that moment for anything in the world and that ticket is priceless to me now. but that was with jerry. now without him, 14 years later face is 100+? it doesnt even make sense. im sure if you wait it out you can find a ticket to a show lets say MSG for cheaper. but thats the only way im going.

ya nobody said we couldnt afford $100 tix, we are just pissed off about it... sure the eagles and others charge more, but hey i wont go see them either... we all have blown more money and got less than a dead reunion show for it (speeding tix, weed busts, taxes etc), but these are (were) our musical idols... now if you said 1/2 the inflated price went to the Rex foundation or some other charitable group then cool... we would not be whining... i almost guarantee you that parking will be more than the last ticket you paid for the grateful dead... we were different one time... now it seems that there is no difference between paying for greedful dead or eagles.... the funny ironic part is nye 1988 the dead were interviewed and role playing like they were making all this money... when a close friend of mine was their limo driver to and from a show he said all they (the band) did was complain about money...i would love to see 20 people show up at the shows... we the people can make a change... yes we can... in comparison... last 2 yrs all good fest had 3 nites of music with ratdog or phil and camping included and lotsa other bands for same price!... what gives?... it does suck because i really wanted to go and yeah for 1 or 2 shows an extra couple hundred bux isnt life changing but it is the principle of it...and to the drunk who spends more than $100 a night on booze... i think i always get stuck next to you at shows screaming the words to the song and dancing into everyone....yes?

Do what you want with you money and time, I just hope no one listens to dave23, this is not the Bastille. maybe we could all have a "sit-out" representing the number of people willing to pay a reasonable price, and see if the most faithful fanbase in the history of live music needs the music more than the band needs the patrons and their money.

I could very well be confused, but when the concession prices are too high, I blame the venue, when ticket prices are too high, i blame the band and management. (with the GD's poor management history in mind)

It comes down to why they are getting back together; Is it because they feel that great music and history can be made and a good time can be had by all, or are they just trying to create a frenzy among wealthy deadheads and make a huge profit doing it.

One reason excites me to no end, the other makes me question what i thought was reality. If I sound negative to you, I don't apologize.

Is that a reference to what the fans should do? Or what they are doing to their fans wallets?

Maybe the ticket prices are cushioned for a returning gas spike? I dunno but the prices are super taxed, a festival price for a show?

Seems they are better off touring alone if it costs that much to have them all together. Whats the special thing that brought them back together this time? Obama? I mean Bush leaving office is certainly reason to celebrate, but hitting your fans over the head?....

Ridiculous! Chicago on sale at 11am today, can't even get on the damn website, they are already on ebay 5 minutes later for about 400 a ticket, someone needs to do something about this crap! These prices are outrageous, unreal

Well this sucks, can't even log onto the site now. I forgot all about it til I hit the showers and woke my ass up to realize it was "DEAD TICKET" day. Looks like from these other cats that it seems like we got some greedheads on our hands with tickets being priced like some Rolling Stones concert. I'd still pay for that, just because it's been 5 YEARS! I hope I can get onto the site asap, but it'll probably be soldout:(

My wife just got our tickets after about an hour getting kicked off and on the site. We decided to spend the $116.50 including service fees for 2 tickets to just get in the door for Chicago...side stage upper level...I really understand everone's pain....economic times are tough...we were not going to spend $230 including fees for good seats.

Funny, the latest Rolling Stone has an article saying how every major act plans to cut tickets costs in consideration of the state of the economy this year except for Britney Spears and the Eagles. Guess the news on the Dead's outrageous ticket pricing hadn't gotten to them yet.

I know Bobby used to be able to work a pair of short-shorts just as well as Britney, but c'mon boys!! Maybe Weir will bring back that old gem Money Money and really rub it in.

This is a friggin' SHAME. Looks like I'll be popping in a vintage DVD from Jerry-days and doing the noodle dance in my living room instead of MSG this year.

for all those complaining about ticket prices: I'm not some savage Machievelian capitalist, but the ticket is worth what the market will bear. And if I was in the band and saw thousands of tickets on Craigs List and Ebay for $250 when face was $50 so some dirtbag scalper could make 400% above what the entire venue, band, crew, etc was making, don't you think I'd be a little pissed off. PS: I got my four for the shoreline and i'm glad you bittermens won't be there.

i wonder if the band is reading any of this?....the more amazing thing is that used ticket stubs from old shows are sold on ebay for more than face value! i guess some people have more money or passion than brains.... who cares about ticket stubs?... i used to give mine up as soon as i got into a show to try and help others get in... or at least that was what i was told.... to think if they were doing this just to sell on ebay someday (wait ...there was no internet yet lol)

I'm boycotting the whole tour....so many other positive things to do with the money... now back to regualar scheduled programming

just because rich douches will pay whatever the ticket agencies want is the reason ticket prices have gotten out of control. But that doesn't make it worth what the market will bear. What are you? a fuckin republican? Sorry, but I DON'T think all the shows will sell out. and the ones that do in richer area of the country (I.E. california, ny) will most likely be populated with mostly older rich folks and younger rich fucks who are using daddies bread to pay for their tickets (please Daddy....I really, really want to go!). And y'all will be looking around at the show wondering where are all the fun free-spirited dancing freaks that used to make a show the wonderous, amazing swirl of GENEROSITY and KINDNESS it used to be?

They couldn't afford it.

and it's totally true about the Rolling Stone article. Seems like just about evry other band is cuttin' back and the Dead are tackin' on.

how tacky.

I just got layed off. Job loss in this country is at an all time high. I am currently reading Phil's book "Searching for the Sound" and was so drawn back to an earlier happier era and gettin' all excited about seeing the boys again when I found out about the ticket prices. Talk about gettin' crushed by your heroes. No shows for me and my girl.

Lawn tickets are $50. That's where the party with the freaks will be and that's where I'll be. And no, I'm not a republican. I just understand simple economics that are going to transpire whether I choose to participate or not. POLL: what is worse? Everybody responsible for putting on the show: the band, the venue, the lighting and sound crew, the security, etc splitting the $100 per ticket OR the guy who does absolutely nothing sitting behind a computer screen and nets $300 of your favorite band and couldn't name you one GD tune? Tell me how that makes sense. I know all this about the Golden Years of Yore....the way things used to be. I went to high school with Jerry's daughter in San Rafael and used to get high with him at lunch, seen the dead 50 times. So what? You glorify the past, you sabotage your future. The world's changed. Have you?

Why should I be happy to pay $100 a ticket just because some scalper on ebay can make $300 on it? That's your justification?

That's what Mick Jagger said when years ago the Stones were the first ones to charge $50 and up for a ticket. He said Why can't we charge more when I see that the ticket agency's are charge $200 and up for them? Hence the massive upswing in ticket prices.

I bet you were plenty happy to pay upwards of $4 a gallon for gas this summer as well huh?

$50 general admission woulda been cool, (i guess lawn is acceptable for $50 ...you know it wouldnt be $20 and were expecting $35 or $37.50 so an extra $12.50...and with increase in everything from security to paying higher min wage for concession and staff inside the arenas....$100 for floor seats is lame but would rather be in back spinning on the lawn anyways....but hey whats it all matter.... if you remember that sometimes all it looks like is paper with numbers and a picture of a dead president... but i am still boycotting because I do understand what WE THE PEOPLE on this here message board are saying.... but ... inside sources say the scene is going to be very retro cool... arrrrrrrrrgh any other pisces having trouble deciding on the principle + money vs love for the band

ok just spent some time on the phone getting the real dope on whats up with ticket prices... it is 2009 and EVERY band who plays at this venue is asking pretty much AT LEAST the same but ussually even more for a ticket! Brittny spears has some tix at dc for $37.50 compare to $67 for the dead, but her high end are $155, eagles high end $180 etc... these do not include gold or silver VIP packages... so i guess I was wrong about the dead being greedy... it is the whole industry from arena insurance to venue fees, unions etc.. i'm not sure what band is playing these venues for $20- $40 since I did not see any... I think alot of us got spoiled by heady fests like all good and langerando but at the same time we havent seen the band in 14 years and just sticker shocked since we do not go to arena venues to see bands like before ... the $4 a gallon wake up call... now tobacco going to get retaxed with new president and am sure most the "news" is going to be a buzzkill but for the 3 hours when the band is playing... all seems to fade away... what we should be super angered with is going on ebay right now and seeing the ticket prices from online scalpers! so the arena, the band, all the overhead get $100 but some idiot with a call center and 8 credit cards can scalp online and never have to see us eye to eye and makes more than the band and venue combined! blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

yeah Damon I guess the point is that the dead had no choice in ticket prices if they wanted to play these venues, which would be the only indoor ones in these cities during this time of year....personally I am on the fence... i doubt my boycotting would really change anything and i doubt anybody really cares if we personally go or not... seems like there are enough people willing to pay whatever...i guess if enough people press the buy it now price for tix on ebay and never pay then they will stop using it to scalp tix... do that close to concert date so they can not relist because i think you have 10 days to pay or something?

Dan, I just have a hard time with they didn't have a choice. I mean, they don't dictate the terms of their ticket prices? Besides that, Weir being a member of Bohemian Grove is the icing on the cake. Your right, it doesn't make a difference if I go or not. It's the principal of the matter.
