After weathering the near-fatal blow of former front man Reid Genaur’s decision to leave the band in Sept. '00, Strangefolk has spent 2001 in a frenzy of regenerative activity. Between adding not one, but two new band members, touring nationally (twice!) and releasing Open Road - their first studio effort since Genaur’s departure... it’s been quite a year for Burlington, VT’s (other) premier jam band!
Despite the changes to Strangefolk’s overall sound, their fan base remains just as loyal and enthusiastic as ever, and for good reason! Longer, more adventurous improvisations, new dimensions and directions in song craft and infectious, funky grooves have kept them coming back for more. If you haven’t seen Strangefolk with the new line-up, you’re really missing out. Rave reviews all point to huge leaps in musicianship since the addition of Luke “Patchen” Montgomery (guitar) and Scott Shdeed (keyboards).
Patchen’s virtuosity not only complements Jon Trafton’s tasteful licks and solos, but also challenges them. It’s not unheard of to find the two of them trading off their time in the spotlight several times within one song. Shdeed’s keys run the gamut from adding a subtle, muted texture to the background melody to an all out, in your face solo that never fails to please. To long time fans of the band, it seemed as though these two new faces did more than fill a void - they’ve inspired the original 3 members, Luke Smith (drums), Erik Glockler (bass) and Jon Trafton (guitar) to reach for new heights in their own playing.
Strangefolk is currently on the 2nd half of a national tour in support of their new album, Open Road... if they’re coming to your neck of the woods, this is a show you don’t want to miss!
