Umphrey's McGee: Mantis Band Enters "New Era"

Umphrey's McGee: Mantis

A note from Umphrey's McGee:

Umphrey's McGee
We are thrilled to reveal the pre-order details for our new album Mantis, which will be released on January 20, 2009. On Inauguration Day, when our country turns a page in its history, we are writing a new chapter of our own.

Our approach to this studio project has been very different than with those preceding it. While you may find one or two vaguely familiar passages on the new album, for all intents and purposes, this is an album consisting entirely of new music. And while it retains the hallmark Umphrey's McGee sound, we feel as though we have produced a body of work that pushes the envelope in composition, arrangement, and group interplay. Because of this, we view this album as the centerpiece of a new era in the evolution of Umphrey's McGee. We are extremely proud of Mantis, and look forward to taking the material for a test run where we thrive - sharing the experience with you live and without a net. Since the songs were realized in the studio rather than on the road, expect them to get a serious workout in 2009 and beyond. We look forward to joining you on tour and watch how the songs change, evolve, and grow as we experiment, deconstruct, reconstruct, and discover the full potential of the new material in a live context.

There's also this cool pre-order and bonus material scenario with Mantis, where the more fans that pre-order the release, the more bonus content the band will "unlock" for everyone. You can read all about it at

Umphrey's McGee is on tour now, dates available here.

Anelog why would you wish that on anyone.... thats like me saying I hope your parents or you get fired from respective employment(s)? I personally do not like sts9 at all but I don't wish them failure.

Personally I think Umphrey's is one of the most technical and practiced bands out there.

really angelog420, really??? i mean cmon man, whats the deal, why so much hate??? so rude, so incredibly rude.

its funny how you put buckethead in your favorite artists. i dont know what you mean when you say: 'Since when did kidz like Heavy Metal in our scene'. i dont know angleog420, but does it matter??

the 'jam scene' is really bout everything, thats why it doesnt really have a certain genre, it incorporates lots of em. plus when in sam's hell did this become 'your' scene?!?!

its everyones. it incompasses all, and embraces all.

its not just yours, you greedy bastard.

God I fucking hate 'Phish' elitists i.e. "Angelog420." I love Umphreys AND Panic AND moe. AND Phish AND STS9 AND many, many others. The show @ the Crystal last Friday was RIDICULOUS. Great jams and a sick 'Shine on you Crazy Diamond' encore...

Saw Umphrey's few times on this tour, not too impressed, and i really wanted to be, they played maybe 4 good sets out of the six i saw, and 2 of them were really good (sounds like i should've liked them but i just didn't really feel it) They are good artists and prolly came out with some sick album for Mantis, i'm also super stoked to hear bisco's new album, they took the fall off to mingle with other side projects and finish up their new album, i think it will be real sick, look forward to arguing which is better when they're both released

Really like that there are so many new songs that we haven't even heard yet until album drops. Band is one of the tightest and most technical out there. I am doing west coast run right now and am taking day off in Seattle before I drop sown to LA, SD, Slim's in SF, and the Mash up at Warfield for Halloween which is one of the craziest things I've ever heard of a band attempting to do and will blow eveyones socks off. Believe me, they are on point right now and packing out each venue I've seen them in this tour. They are my favorite touring band and I can't believe all of the people that post all these bashing comments about bands they don't like. If you don't like a band don't read the article about them and waste your time posting hate mail. I, and many other people are extremely in love with this band and can't wait for the new album. See all you west coast cats on rest of tour, and NYE, by the way with Buddy Guy...nuf said. UM FOREVER! Keep killin' it boys.

I think Umphrey's is collectively the most talented band touring right now. Within a single show they more genres and styles of music that you could possibly imagine while still keeping their truly distinct sound. They have an amazing array of beautiful and hard rocking original songs, play all covers note for note and their jams are always unique and high energy. They are also one of the few jam bands that I think actually come of pretty well in a studio setting and I am extremely exited for this new release and can't wait to hear it and see them live again.

I also must say as just a general statement, I hope a lot of the hate between the fans of bands does stop. This thread has been alright and angelog420 had a nice little apology after his bit of hate. But as a whole there are a lot feuds between the fans of bands. But like angelog420 said, this is our scene and it is a very unique and diverse one at that. I mean you look at the top bands of the jam scene, Grateful Dead, Phish, UM, Bisco, STS9, moe., SCI, YMSB, MMW, just in that you've covered a truly remarkable array of styles and genres and we are constantly pushing them to go into even further uncharted territories, as long as we can come along for the ride. On the contrary most scenes, if they do one album a little out of the audiences comfort zone they get shit on. We are a very opened minded scene both in life and in music, and having a scene with such a wide range of sounds, your bound to not like some of it, but at the same time others do. But we are still all bound to this thing we call the jam scene where even if we are at a festi and one person goes and see's STS9 and the other goes to see UM, we'll still go back to camp and share a bowl while listing to YEM.

phreak89 -

While I admire your sentiment of "can't we all just get along," your entire diatribe reeks of an exact replica of a monologue I would use to stereotype a "jamband kid."

I grew up when the word "jamband" was an underground term, and listened to all of the bands you mentioned at one point in time or another to some extent. I thought it was the end-all/be-all pinnacle of musical achievement (this while I was a Music Theory major at a major midwest university).

Do yourself a favor. Go out and buy some records outside of the jamband scene. The Pixies. Elliot Smith. The Hold Steady. Can. Spoon. Beethoven. Chopin. Hell, go revisit the entire Beatles catalog chronologically (I just did...wanna blow your freakin' mind out in a car? I didn't notice that the lights had changed!)

I'm not saying abandon your jamband roots. Hell, some of the UM guys live in my neighborhood, and have actually attended some of my various bands' shows. Those guys are incredible musicians, swell guys, and deserve nothing of the utmost respect for their musical accomplishments.

I'm sure they'd be the first to agree that you need to step out of the BiscoYonderMcSectorIncident box for a minute and see what's out there, and I'm not talking about going on Phish tour (though I definitely plan to see a few shows this summer myself).

Just do me one favor. Go out and get yourself an album of someone who's album is not sold in the "Home Grown Music Network's" Catalog. And this is coming from someone who's album is sold in the Homegrown Music Network's Catalog.

Do it. I promise it won't bite. And if it does, I'm sure that there's something in either the medicine cabinet or your iPod that will cure what ails ya'.

I saw UM at the Smith Opera House in Geneva, NY a couple Fridays ago. My only complaint is that it took me awhile to get my face back, after they melted it the fuck off my head. Anelog420, the fact that you even use the word "scene" and have 420 in your user name says it all.

Umphreys Mcgee sucks... how many times are you going to hear the same miss tinkles played the same way at the same venue... face it they suck!!"

dude, read what you posted, then look at your jambase name. Now i am a HUGE fan of DMB, but are you serious? If your biggest complaint with UM is that they play they same sounding songs over and over, then i guess you dont hit too many dave shows up because RARELY, and i mean rarely even when i am listening to all of dave's live trax, do you hear them do anything different than the first 45seconds-1minute of the song. and i love the tinkles odyssey so screw you.

So by suggesting someone expand their musical horizons outside the jamband scene (which is "separate from all the others"), I am an elitist who is against diversity and acceptance?

Methinks one ought look in the mirror whilst making such a statement.

DMB4Life you are an IDIOT!!! I've seen Umphrey's 15+ times and maybe heard them play miss tinkles twice...but I guess thats what you get for being a dumb Dave fan. Don't get me wrong Dave matthew's BAND makes some good music, Dave puts together shitty acoustic rifts with a mediocer voice (excuse the bad spelling). Every time i see Umphrey's it's almost as if I'm listening to a different band all together each show, and they never cease to impress me. Dave will come out and play the same jam on the same song year after year.

I can't wait for this new Umph cd to come out I'm sure it'll blow me and other Phreeks away!

dmb4life2000 You dont like Umphrey's? Really? Maybe its because Dave is one of the most boring musicians ever and you can't handle anything that moves more slowly than Dave's Brushfire Records ( I know he's not on that label, just drawing comparison) mellow vibe. Don't get me wrong, I dig what Dave does but just because every band doesn't keep it mellow doesnt mean they suck. Plus everyone knows DMB may as well be adult contemporary for how mainstream it is. Enjoy your "crash" I'll enjoy my "Miss Tinkle's" P.S. Ill say it every time I post on here because it needs to be said. If you don't like a band how about you don't click on their articles and talk shit. If an article about Dave was on JB I wouldn't click on it to put down their music and their fans opinions, I would just not click the link.

Now let me bout i get a band together, a guy with a decent voice who's a good guitar player but his solos are always the same but writes all their good songs, then add a good bassist that i'll throw a bone to every once in 10 shows, a keyboardist who we won't use to its full potential, and two great percussionists. Then there's me jake cinninger i'll just pretend i'm jamming by playing a few metal chords then break into a solo just as the jam gets interesting, and actually i'll just solo every oppurtunity i get without allowing any interesting and new music to rise to the surface before i solo. (if this sounds very contradictory it's because it is, umphrey's is a great band that i sometimes feel gets in the way of itself, and btw they have been too 'heavy metal' on their northeast shows)

Smokey Umphrey's could be a great band, but using a monetary argument to prove it only means that fall out boy is better than umphrey's, think about a good reason as to why umphrey's is an excellent band, we should start having legitimate arguments, arguments are okay but how bout some substance that isn't as simple as good or bad, and maybe why.

Astronaut Mitts, I don't think UM is trying to be the Biscuits and that is what a lot of diehard tDB fans don't get. UM and the Biscuits are by far my two favorite bands for different reasons. I'm guessing you were at the albany & burlington shows for Conspiritor? Heavy metal is just one of the many sounds UM uses in there repetoir and i don't even think the NE shows had that much metal.

The reason you are being called an elitist is because you mentioned that you studied music theory at a major midwest university, you claimed that the members of UM go to your various bands shows, and stated that your album is being sold on homegrown. Sorry man, you sound pretty pretentious. I'm all for listening to many types of music, but I'm not for going around and telling people what to listen to.

Commenter 2: Is this band's name Phish? since it isn't Phish it shouldn't be on jambase because the only Jam bands to ever grace the planet are the Grateful Dead and Phish

Commenter 3: Hey commenter 2 you are a dickbag sleazeball, I really like this band

Commenter 2: Why don't you go suck a fat one Commenter 3 I know what jam bands are because I've seen Phish 3000 times.

Commenter 3: Why don't you go listen to your scratched up copy of Junta and smoke a big fat joint because Bisco is the greatest band ever

Commenter 2: Why don't you go take 800 pills of ecstasy and dance to your stupid Bisco Dicksits

Commenter 4: Why do you comment on a story of a band you don't even like?

Commenter 5: I don't know man I've seen this band 72 times this year and they really bring it every time

we all know where this goes. it's the same shit every time. but it's still goddamn entertaining!

Umphreys blows. Doschi - biggest douchebag post ever. Best comment I have ever read on Jambase goes to the kid who posted maybe we could get along if we stopped using terms like Scene and heady. +1 to you Sir.

I wasn't trying to say that UM is trying to be Bisco, though i think that both could take lessons from the other. such as i think that Bisco could take lessons in UM ability to move through jams without sounding sloppy at times, and UM could look take note at the patience i see in bisco when they build up their jams (the first set at Northern Lights was pretty metal)

Deluxe ordered. Psyched for this album to drop, can't wait to see what genres, tones and textures UM will be exploring next. For me, Umphrey's is without a doubt the most unpredictable, polished, tight, inventive band on the planet right now - currently touring or not. Enjoy the new album.

Umphreys is the downfall of jam music. They suck worse then any other band out there on the scene. enough guitar hero sludge metal.Theres a reason 80s metal bands aren't around anymore, because they are cheesy as hell just like umphreys and im sorry ive given this band many of chances and they have been nothing more then utterly terrible every time ive seen them. I dont understand how people could like this corny shit that much

All you haters need to get a life! Do you guys have nothing better to do then to sit around and bad mouth a band that you don't really dig? If you don't like a band that's you opinion, everyone has their own musical preference and their own opinions on who the best band is, or the best guitarist. I mean their are people out there that think Mickey hart was an overrated drummer, or think that Jerry Garcia was a medeocur guitarist at best, same with Trey. I personally don't believe this but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If you don't like Umph cause you can't deal with their sound then don't listen to them. Go to your crappy STS9 shows (a band that doesnt even improvise on stage, everything they play is planned out) or bisco or whatever other band you get a woody for on the scene, but stop waisting everyones time and telling people how shitty you think a band is, cause in reality its just your opinion.

and in my opinion UMPH RULES!!!

Yeah I never can understand how ignorant you have to be to relate UM to an 80's metal band just because they explore the metal genre once or twice in a show. These guys tear it up on a consistent basis and go through not just metal, but electronic, reggae riffs, funk, and chill jams that are all expertly executed.

May not be everyone's cup of tea, but they definitely are awesome. And I do enjoy all the other bands on the scene as well. Bisco, STS9, Moe., you name it. However hands down the Umph has got the best technical skills out of anybody and really do play circles around the rest,

gbkman87 asks - "Do you guys have nothing better to do then to sit around and bad mouth a band that you don't really dig?" THEN SAYS: "Go to your crappy STS9 shows (a band that doesnt even improvise on stage, everything they play is panned out)..."

So, let me ask you gbkman87 do you not have anything better to do than to sit around and bad mouth a band that you don't really dig?

You are fucking stupid gbkman87.

I was also at the UM and DMB at alpine shows. I thought both bands killed it. UM played very well, and Dave always has the same type of high energy show. They are pretty damn consistent. UM is the best opener I have ever seen, and one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I really do hope this album lives up to the past few. Anchor Drops, Safety in Numbers, and the bottom half are all sick.

Does anyone else think it's funny that when people slam an Umphrey's article they get massive amounts of thumbs down, but when people bash a Bisco article they get assive amounts of thumbs up? This tells me there are more people out there who really know what good, quality music is. I mean, come on people! When a band is named after a designer drug, that is a signal of sub-par music.

I'm sorry but none of the bands that have recently emerged should go down, because in my opinion all of them bring things to the table that Phish definitely does NOT. also people will actually be able to get tickets to see bands there are still on the upswing; I think it's safe to say as good as phish will be they won't ever really be Phish again.

and umphrey's is sick as fuck - if we are all not burned to a crisp in 40 years, they will be one of THE main historical bands of the era. hell, they might even still be contributing.

I always get on jam base and read the coments and I never write in,cause i laugh at all of the shit talking that goes down, but for the people who think that umphreys sucks have no idea what they are talking about. I just saw them monday at the crystal bay in north lake tahoe and it was an absolute killer show. They had the halloween set up and it was super trippy. The every breath u take jam was some of the tightest jamming ive seen them do.ja junk was crushed. The spooky halloween jams were so absurd. They obviously bring it.This new album is going to great. I think they are only going to get better and better. Umphreys definetely doesnt suck.every one at that show was going completely off including me.

runnin with the devil last night was just retarded, they opened up seconed set sounding a little eddie van halenish and then just went ape shit. i was thinking that they would do some G n R, or even some RATT to tribute the strip, but recreating David Lee Roth insanity screaming was hands down briliant... also a pretty cool after midnight encore followed with some new mantis. House of Blues

umphrey's IS one of the better "jambands" on the scene....bc thats what they are....but they are still just a jamband....they really arent doing anything too special, new, innovative, or different than some of the other jambands out there... But atleast they are better than MOE!!! if only umphrey's could get moe's vibraphone/percussion player, then we would have a band to going crazy for....if you want a good jamband, check out The Everyone Orchestra...or Praang, or zilla..etc etc etc...dont get me wrong, i dig umphreys. i just dont think they are anything special..

UM used to cover Phish, moe., and other bands when they were starting out in 98 because you always need to have covers as an original band to hook people in. Most people don't become immersed in an unknown band with no publicity playing original music just like that. Also, I think that if you asked Brendan Bayliss who some of his greatest influences are Phish would undoubtedly be on that list.

Moebeans starstarstarstarstar Fri 10/31/2008 02:35AM

Thats why this album coming out is going to be a test to see if they can take it to the phish level. They certainly have the talent, but to say they are better then moe is pushing it. until they have songs like Timmy Tucker,Rebubula, kyles, plane crash, and Happy hour hero, they cant be better. They need more substance in their songs and thats why Im excited about the new album. Moe completely rocks .ive only seen maybe 3 or 4 off shows out of 61, and even those still were ok. Panic and phish are the kings. But the energy in an umph show is incredible!

Tripping Billie

Why does everyone feel the need to bring up all the other bands they listen to when posting a comment on here... This article is about UMs new album, its not about UM vs every other band discussed on this site... Do STS9 and UM really belong in the same debate ever??? Probably not. Why must everyone argue over such subjective ideas??? This isn't professional sports, its art. Theres no winner, no loser, no statistics and absoultely no use in comparing all these bands with such drastic musical differences...
