Marc Brownstein on 20/20 Tonight

Marc Brownstein Featured on 20/20 Tonight (10/10)

Marc Brownstein
Everywhere you look famous folks are urging the youth to vote. A plethora of uninformed voters could hit the polls next month. Tonight (Friday 10/10 at 10 p.m. ET) on ABC News program 20/20, John Stossel asks: "Should uninformed voters be casting their vote on Nov. 4?"

Part of this report was filmed at last summer's Camp Bisco (read the review here) and tonight's show will feature an interview with HeadCount co-founder and Disco Biscuits bass player Marc Brownstein.

Brownstein will perform with Conspirator tonight when they open for Umphrey's McGee at The Higher Ground in Burlington, VT. Complete Conspirator dates available here.

you can watch it here:

ABC did a TERRIBLE job with this story. Someone who helped film this had this to say:

"we knew we would take some shots here. and i guess it is easy for me to be disappointed because i wanted a GREAT piece on HeadCount that would show the rest of the nation that young people care & are just as significant as any other voter. well, that's not what we have here, but just because it doesnt fluff HeadCount doesnt make it AWFUL. i see it as more of an indictment of those who say the voice of the young electorate isnt significant. its just too bad that some people will be swayed by the misleading reporting- including the title of the segment. hey, if anything it is a compliment that the people who are "scared" of your vote recognize the significance of the group as a whole.

we were prepared for some unfair criticisms of the 18-24 yr old electorate. but overall, this segment lets HeadCount express the goals & mission of the organization- too bad it was steered in one direction by someone's agenda.

they cut Brownie's quote in half- the "lots of uneducated voters" quote was a comment on the fact that HeadCount offers nonpartisan issue sheets at the tables alongside the register to vote materials & voter registration assistance the organization offers each night.

as for the fan interviews, there was some fancy editing here as well. for example, i think it appears that someone comments that there are 12 senators. "am i far off?" she says..well she was a bit closer than you think because she was asked about supreme court justices. i know they bent some other on-camera stuff in the same way.

i was with that camera all day- if they wanted to, there were enough positive interviews to show the solid percentage of camp bisco attendees who are knowledgeable. well, they only show 2 good comments from camp. what about the teachers they spoke to in the ticket lines? what about interviews with HeadCount volunteers that they conducted showing the opinions of the people who care enough to help everyone else speak (vote) for themselves. or the scores of other people who were definitely well versed? didnt want to use those i guess. not to mention- you dont need to know what roe v wade is to know which candidate you agree with when it comes to abortion.

what isnt fair was they were 100% supposed to- promised- that there would be "adult" on the street interviews as well to show the similarities between responses. there are none of these types of interviews. it was going to be a balanced segment and it comes out a tad skewed. to be honest, there is a clear agenda in the story.

Andy Bernstein & Marc got to express the mission of HeadCount- hopefully that is clear. you can't take away the significance of what the group does. i mean, anyone who sees this and says "yeah, 18-24 year olds shouldnt vote" has a screw loose. the merits of the organization will always stand & i hope the organization has been able to give back to the community in many ways.

it is what it is. plus, i think we did the proper vetting & 20/20 pulled a bit of a hatchet job on the footage we worked so hard to help them get. oh well- it doesnt diminish the value of what's being done by the organization.

i can pull a hatchet job too...evidenced from this piece, turns out Stossel, a self-described libertarian, obviously isnt much of an advocate for personal freedoms. remember when he said AIDS research gets too much money? laughable. does anyone know how many times Stossel has been "reprimanded" by ABC for shotty work? everyone should be pissed off that he is selling this to America.

yes, some people will be foolish enough to allow themselves to be influenced by this reporting. but hopefully even more will see it for what it is- and maybe some young people will take a minute to educate themselves.

the truth is, that 80% of young people who are registered to vote actually show up on election day. if we all showed, we would outnumber the baby boomers. and these voters know what's important to them- they know why THEY want to vote. that's good enough for me. and it's good enough for the candidates- or else they wouldnt court your vote. Barrack Obama & John McCain, if they saw this, would laugh at Stossel too. ALL voters are important- that's how we come to decisions as a nation. anyone who thinks otherwise is a crotchety old (wo)man."

anderson cooper did a much better story:

Excellent post BGsteve. It is really sad that Obama was dooped so easily by the same exact tactics that Bush used to get us into Iraq. As if Bush didn't fuck our national debt enough with the war, he had to double what Iraq cost in just 5 days... And now as we speak we are firing rockets from Afghanistan into Pakistan, a policy that Obama openly supports on his campaign website. You Obama supporters hate the neo-conservatives for the right reasons but an informed vote would lead you to some of the really great 3rd party candidates we have. When I ask why Obama supporters why they are voting for him, the two main reasons are because they are sick of War and Greed. Two things that Obama is very much in favor of! You don't have to look at some weird, bullshit, conspiracy theory propaganda website; this info is right on the man's campaign site... Unfortunately it is too late now. Obviously if most Obama voters went third party, we would have a McCain win. I am not denying this. But when Obama wins, which he will, let's try this further progression into socialism. (It's funny because the reason why most people hate Bush is because of his socialist policies... so they opt for an even more socialist candidate?) I bet in 2012 you will truly be an informed voter! Maybe then we can finally get rid of these McBama Republocrats and bring politicians in who aren't purchased by special interest groups and believe that peace means NO WAR... I know change that I believe in isn't pulling out of Iraq and moving right into Arab country X, Y or Z.

The producers of this piece, by pressing their "young voters are uninformed" premise, seem to suggest that older voters are better informed. But there's no logical support for that stance. Seriously, outside of racism or shear stupidity, how does one explain any voter earning under $250,000 voting for McCain? A McCain vote from a sub-$250K earner is like a Colonel Sanders vote coming from a chicken.

WTF!!!!!, This was absolutley a one sided arguement. I'm sure they interviewed plenty and look which ones they used. Something needs to be done about this, this isn't FOX, this was ABC supposedly an impartial news. Why didn't they not go to a bingo parlor, or a back-woods church, and perform the same tests. Tell these people not to vote, and see what happens. FOR REAL PEOPLE, we gotta do something about this. Write letters, make a stance, headcount should not get dissed like this.

Totally one sided! Unfortunately there are a lot of ignorant people in our country, but they come in ALL ages. Of course they can peace together a lot of stupid answers from a bunch of Bisco kids, but that doesn't mean young Americas shouldn't vote.

Anyone seen Leno do the same thing where he asks people on the street similar answers? Same deal: stupid people, but they give an even sampling with most being over 25.

Anyway inform yourselves people so those old, right-wing assholes don't take advantage of us leaving us with no social security, a terrible economy, and an endless war, while they fill their pockets with money from defense companies, oil companies, and various crooked corporate organization to whom they give kick backs.

haha that segment was fucking terrible. I am going to confess that I was the moron who got quoted 3 times, yes that's 3 FUCKING TIMES saying that there was 52 states. I'm not going defend it because obviously it's a stupid thing to say. I would like to say that to anyone who was there, and to everyone who wasn't, The majority of those people, myself included, were saying stupid shit to the interviewers just because it was funny. How are you going to get a 100% straight answer out of a bisco fan? come on

aaaahahahahaha that video was awesome. you know how you always feel like you are surrounded by retards at a bisco concert? well, this clip just affirms your intuition. 51-52 states, 12-50 senators per state? are you serious? i like tdb music, but jesus christ there are only so many sub-100 i.q. spunions that i can handle on a given day. you should have finished high school, at least, before you went on the road selling bunk rolls in your flat brimmed hat, my friend. and perhaps stossel should have also gone to a country music festival to interview some equally bright bible-beating red-staters. vote for whoever you feel sucks less, and pray that they are able to hoist us out of the impending depression, so that we can all afford to go see phish. legalize, regulate, tax, sell.

BGsteveBG, I'm not really sure what your article is trying to say. Its pretty incompetent, because the bail-out doesn't effect Lehman brothers. They already went bankrupt, and the bail-out will not affect that. Their collateralized debts have been sold, its over. So they have nothing to gain by Obama being elected. You spread mindless propaganda.

Kider54... You used the word incompetent very awkwardly. You should have said "I am an incompetent debater because my arguments are incredibly weak." Just because Lehman went under before the bailout doesn't mean they paid for a huge chunk of Obama's campaign before it was too late for them. The fact is that Obama and McCain both accept shitloads of money from corporate america and special interest groups, which in turn influences their vote, which in turn gives them ridiculous gift packages and paid vacations. This cycle goes round and round. Again, you are mad at McCain for the right reasons but fail to see the same old bullshit neo-Washington politics being practiced by your fake messiah. Get a clue. Voting for Obama is just perpetuating the same back and forth republocrat banter that is preventing any REAL change for this country.

SMASHY SMASHY. Hmmm, this is a funny arguement. Did you actually read the article that I was refering to? I know obama was the number 2 reciever of money from fannie/freddy, but yet you didn't mention that and that is not what we are talking about. We are talking about recent contributions from lehmen brothers. They didn't even know it was too late, till recently. Its all been the credit derivatives market, and people don't even know how bad this will be. We are talking 50 trillion plus. I never said obama was the right answer. And of course McCain is the wrong answer. If you want to show me your intelligence, PLEASE message me personally. I have a masters in finance (and I am a day trader for a living) and would absolutely love for you to explain the backruptcy of lehman too me. Regardless of yet more mindless rambles, please everyone make yourself be heard and write to ABC.

Bottom line is that this clip is just not good journalism, and i think that Sotssel lets his opinion rise above the truth of the issue. Right wing conservatives have always mocked a director/producer like Michael Moore and especially his work in Bowling For Columbine when he knocks on doors in Canada, and insists that most people in Canada don't lock their doors, these are not real statistics, and neither is what Stossel did by editing out all the people that answered the questions correctly. This is just this elitist point of view, I would love that only educated and informed people vote, but the statistics show that a much greater portion of voter turnout is actually made up of people that have some education, and we all see how that worked out. Democracy only works when you have a wide array of opinions to learn from each other, and for all people to give their input as to how the country is being run, because while some people may not know who Ruth Ginsberg is or some questions that are irrelevant to how the country is being run, and whether the Policies that are being carried out are helping the people in their lives and themselves.
