Phish Reunites…Briefly

THE WEDDING RECEPTION
YOU REALLY WANTED TO BE AT

Last evening, the members of Phish played a few songs at the wedding of the band's old road manager Brad Sands. The quartet played staples "Suzy Greenberg," "Waste" and "Julius." Afterwards, Police drummer Stewart Copeland joined the Wedding Band for a rendition of The Police's "Can't Stand Losing You" and The Meters' "Fire On The Bayou."

A short clip of the festivities has already surfaced on YouTube.

We send our best to the newlyweds and welcome the flood of baseless speculation that should follow this short, happy reunion of musical soulmates.

WOW! I have had goosebumps for the twenty minutes, and watched the video four times. They are definitely playing on the wedding bands gear, not theirs. I can only imagine the conversation that transpired that led to the four of them taking their places behind the instruments. Wondering if those songs were selected by Brad, or if those were the ones that they collectively remembered how to play well, there on the spot. Either way, I'm stoked...

At least 2 months of practice before any tour tho por favor. If they can't play Divided or YEM right, then I don't want to hear it. Let's be patient folks. We don't want or need unpracticed Phish ( to wit: listen to some of the Divideds from the last year they toured). Please, please put your heart into it. We all know that Phish requires an enormous amount of time and dedication from all four members to be valid. Here's hoping they commit fully

so you think to yourself, bummer, Phish re-united, but they played Julius, not a 20 minute Ghost or Twist or something... but then you listen a little more closely, and, given that it's a Julius - and it *would* be a Julius - you realize that, sure, Trey just wailing on a repeated line, but then you *also* realize that he's locked in with Page, and Mike is trying to get with Trey, but Trey is paying more attention to Page, so Mike compensates and they're fine - not to mention he's basically soloing too, since bassists do that during repetitive guitar lines - and then as soon as Trey chords, Page is in, picking up where he left off, and I mean like right where he left off, and then he's in it with FIshman, and of course Mike is with Fish, and....!!! YES! PHISH!!!!!

I know this will get many negative votes but it has to be said by one of us that has traveled from coast to coast to see Phish. Yes, it was nice that they were all together and relations are good enough that they all agreed to do an impromtu set. BUT it hurts a bit to see the same four guys that have had me spinning, confused, elated, dancing, holy shitting and laughing out of shear joy-reappear for the first time since Coventry as a F-ing wedding band. i understand everyone's unbrideled enthusiasm but c,mon!! Some A-hole yelled Have Nagila (sp.?) a jewish wedding song at the end?!?!?! Thats the equivalent of yelling 'FREEBIRD!!!' to Coltrane.

gutterlush, I dig your wanting a little more respect for Phish than a wedding band, but I think the boys themselves get the joke - I mean, keep in mind that they played a wedding the last time they "weren't playing together," and they did it for a close friend. this seems like a voluntary action that they all fully enjoyed. as to the Hava Negilla shout, it's a far cry from yelling "Freebird" at 'Trane, because Phish is actually (at least?) half Jewish, and in the past, they've played other Hebrew traditionals like Yerushalayim Shel Zahav and Avenu Malkenu as a stroke of irony at big-venue rock concerts - to ask them for Hava Negilla at a wedding they're grinning like assholes to play, I think, is pretty acceptable...

Or I could just be the most jealous bastard for knowing that such undeserving tools were at the phirst Phish 'reunion' ... AND Copeland too?!?!!? AARRRGGHHH Left nut-packed primed and ready to go...

O.K. Imagine this...you are a member of a WEDDING BAND and these musicians borrow your instruments to run through some great tunes well. I guess a break followed. What do you play next? Pulling out the wedding band standards like "Boogie Shoes" or "Endless Love" may disappoint the crowd.

Congrats to Brad and his new wife. As for Phish, I think this is awesome. They were being best friends to Brad and making his wedding one that will not be forgotten. As for people that think that is degrading to Phish to play as a wedding band or for some guy to shout Hava Negilla in such "brilliance" is ridiculous. I think it is histerical and I bet they all thought it was funny as well. For me this is just reassurance that our time will come when we can all quit our jobs that we have built up for the past 4 years and go see the boys rip it up again. Made my night on Saturday to hear Phish was playing. I told the whole dam bar I was out. Keep practicing boys....

As far as giving the guy shit about Hava Nagila, it wouldn't be a stretch. Gordon is Jewish along with about a quarter of the fan base! Think about "Avenu Malkenu" and "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav". I think it would have been more likely than Suzy, hell that song is weird for a wedding if you think about it. CK is cool after this Crows Tour. He has already stated that Trey has spoken to him about something "BIG" and always insisted that he didn't feel it was over. He loves it too much to quit. Save your pennies and buy a motorcycle! Multiply that sum by the number of Little Feat songs that Phish has covered, and then divide by 12.7. Practice? P R A C T I C E ? ? ? This is PHISH!!! How many albums, how many shows? A little respect please. These guys could abandon music all together, take up Karate, master the art and still come back 10 years later and rock it out like no other. You don't think they know YEM and Divided backwards and forwards? Check yourself there rookie.

Oh..rookie huh? Did you go to any shows in say..'96? how about even..'95? I saw my first show in 1994. If you think some of the YEM's and Divided's on the last tour weren't sloppy (which IMHO is the result of Trey solo tours and long breaks. That kind of complicated music needs to be played on a fairly consistant basis. obviously you yourself are not a musician. ask one, they'll confirm this. I'll bet even Trey will admit he has to go back and relearn something he hasn't played in a while. it happens to all of us. no big deal) then you my friend, are the rookie here. peace, the Pharmer

Oh, and I'll add little factual research here if anyone has time. Right here on this very website in it's archives I believe you can find some actual show reviews from the last tour. Also, it is widely rumored that Trey broke up the band because in part that he couldn't stand seeing the reviews on this site and others quoting such sloppiness and unpractice, and that they were in effect true because at that point in his life, he had neither the time nor effort required to present Phish the way they should be presented.

I know I'll get bashed for this. Trust me I'm a huge fan and mean no disrespect when I simply say what I think they all know (look at Page's recent comments) and that is that a proper Phish reunion would require a huge amount of time, effort AND dedication from all four members and I hope that this is indeed, coming in the not too distant future. TAKE CARE OF YOUR SHOES!

Pharmer:

You are exactly correct. The last year of Phish's tightness was '99. When they came back from the break the wheels just fell off. Dont get me wrong, I love these guys and saw many a show on the final tour. Comparing them at that point to the way they were in say 1997 was just a completely different band. If you listen to some of the shows from '97 (which is my fav year) they are having as much fun as a band can have on stage. Their last tour they just went through the motions. And Trey was eating a lot of zanex. Zanex and alcohol makes for sloppy anything, especially guitar playing. This next comment is just to stir the pot a little: Eddie Van Halen is the greatest guitar player of all time!

Let the djacoustic bashing begin!

haha y'alls is hilarious. especially phunkyjedi08. "locked in"? are you kidding? they're playing a wedding. and everyone else who is debating practicing. did anyone see them after the hiatus? rhetorical. of course you all did. how many of their "staple" songs did they blow in a big way? i saw them struggle through stash in the most pathetic of ways. i think phish is good when they're good, but there's more than enough proof that these guys, however latently talented, need to practice their material and actually, i dunno, try? there's nothing worse than an epic musical journy cut short by a band member or members lack of interest or preparation. phish. is. just. a. band.
