Jeff Mattson, founder and lead guitarist of The Zen Tricksters, quintessential jamband with roots in rock, jazz, and bluegrass, will be a special guest with Peter Rowan & Friends at Tribeca Blues (16 Warren Street, NY, NY - 212.766.1070) on Thursday, September 13. The legendary Peter Rowan is best known for Old and In the Way, the 1970’s musical association with Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Vassar Clements, and John Kahn. Mattson will open Rowan’s show with an acoustic set, and then he and other members of The Zen Tricksters will join Rowan during his sets.
Mattson will also play a solo acoustic set at Tribeca Blues on Wednesday, September 19, prior to a special-guest-festooned performance by the Dead Center AllStars. The AllStars will feature Jorma Kaukonen as well as members Hot Tuna, Max Creek, the Tricksters, and Kerry Kearney.
Later that week, the Tricksters will shift back to their bluegrass mode when the renowned fiddle king, Vassar Clements, takes the stage on Friday and Saturday, September 21 and 22, at Tribeca Blues in a musical union with The Zen Tricksters. Clements’ career spans over fifty years when he began as one of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass boys in 1949. Over the years, he has played with Dicky Betts, Jerry Garcia, Old and In the Way, The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, David Grisman, and Paul McCartney.
The New York-based Tricksters have been together for over two decades and may surprise some of their fans at these shows with their mastery of the bluegrass, western swing, and southern boogie that all figure prominently in a Peter Rowan and Vassar Clements show. Tickets are available for all three shows online at TicketWeb.
