Just when you thought the festival season was winding down here comes one to finish the summer off with style. On Saturday, September 22, S.O.V. Productions and the San Geronimo Valley Cultural Center will host a legion of incredible talents. The setting is a golden redwood and live oak filled valley. The music will range from tribal rhythms to jazz with a twist to full force funk with just about everything in between. Acts will begin at 1pm and go into the night. The event is all ages and partial proceeds will benefit Music Savers, a program to maintain funding for music education in local public schools.
Marin locals the Matt Butler Band will start the show off right with rhythmic nature-inspired grooves. Some of you may know Matt from his longtime gig as the drummer for Jambay. Mighty Dave and his French Kissers sound a little daring and indeed they are. Led by keyboardist extraordinaire Dave Pellicciaro, the riffs will be smokin' and the crowd will be rockin'. Don't use up all your energy early because next up comes Robert Walter's 20th Congress. Killer keyboards and horns galore, a funky good time is definitely in store with these guys. Longtime guitarist, composer and Bay Area resident, Will Bernard brings his latest incarnation Motherbug over the bridge to throw a new sound into the mix. Jazzy guitar wizardry mixes with a solid, kickin' backbone for your listening pleasure. Pulling us back from the stratosphere will be Melvin Seals & His Melting Pot. Many of us have the fondest thoughts of Melvin at the wheel of his Hammond B-3 as longtime keys master for the Jerry Garcia Band. His latest project presents some old favorites with new flavor and lots of funky originals jammed to their fullest.
The evening's final act brings together members from many of the day's groups and some new additions for a healthy dose of Mike Clark's Prescription Renewal. Mike, the drummer for Herbie Hancock's Headhunters,
anchors the group from his kit and will bring along his Headhunters band
mate, legendary bassist Paul Jackson. Just these jazz pioneers alone would
be an extra special treat but several more ingredients will make this group
oh so tasty. The three B-3 gentlemen: Melvin, Dave and Robert will be
onstage. Rounding out the ensemble will be Will Bernard on strings, Cheme
(of the 20th Congress) on sax, along with several other guests. What a way
to bring in the Autumnal Equinox!
